Warm Weather, Daylight Savings, and a Boston Baby Shower

I can’t believe the weekend is over already, and the time change isn’t helping. I’m excited that springing ahead means that we will have more light in the evenings, but the mornings are going to be rough for the next few weeks. And I am not a fan of losing that hour of the weekend.

Last week brought a few really warm days in Baltimore- like highs in the 80s. Which meant morning runs were in 50-60 degrees! I ended up running  5 days in a row (Monday-Friday) just because it felt so good to be outside. It looks like we will have some typical March weather for a bit now, unfortunately.

On Thursday I ate lunch outside, and saw that there was still a pile of snow in a nearby parking lot. I guess it will all melt eventually!

snow

Let’s take a look at last weeks workouts:

Monday: 5 miles and core work

monday

Tuesday: 6.22 miles with 3 x 1 mile at 10k pace (was supposed to be 7:30s; ended up being 7:38, 7:35, 7:18- there’s a slight uphill on the route I run on the way out, so I always end up a little faster on the way back)

Wednesday: Strength training plus 3.15 miles easy

Thursday: 4.8 miles and core/hip exercises

thursday

Friday: 7.2 miles

friday

Saturday: Rest- I went to my friend’s baby shower in Boston and left the house at 4:30am- even I’m not crazy enough to get up at 3am to run!

baby shower

The early flight was worth it to get to spend the day celebrating Alli and JT! (Remember when they got engaged and married?) After the shower we hung out at Alli’s sister’s house drinking wine (well, some of us…) and catching up.

shower

Sunday: 6 miles on the hotel treadmill…when we checked into the hotel the night before it was dark out so I wasn’t able to scope out anywhere to run. The hotel gym was empty and it wasn’t too bad getting this run done on the treadmill.

Total: 32.37 miles

Walked: 20.45 miles  Push-ups: 3 days

Yearly Total: 434.6/2016

This was my highest weekly mileage in a while, especially considering my “long” run was just 7 miles. However, most weeks I run 5 days a week and this week I did 6. I’ve been enjoying my tempo runs each to help me prepare for a 10k in about a month. Although 10k pace feels much harder than it did 6 months ago!

How do you feel about the time change?

How many days a week do you usually run?

Who else has seen snow that hasn’t melted yet?

Looks like you had a great weekend!

I’m anxiously awaiting the time change here in Sydney as I am SO tired of waking up in the dark! I’ll miss the extra sunlight in the evenings but it’s so hard to wake up when your brain thinks it’s still time to sleep!

I agree! I definitely prefer when it’s lighter in the mornings!

I hate the time change for the darkness in the morning but I am trying really hard to deal with it lol. hopefully it’s only a couple of weeks before it’s light early enough for me to run outside again! I can get a few miles in still but if I need ot run more than like 4, I gotta go back to the treadmill. And it won’t be fun getting my son up for school today!

I have no idea how long it will take for it to be light when I am out running but hopefully just a few weeks. I feel like I just need to push through a few more weeks of dark, cold(wish) runs before it actually feels like spring.

My thoughts on the time change: well, for once I’ll actually be waking up like normal people!
And then I was exhausted anyway, lol. Sucha fun weekend (and I’m glad that the hotel had a Keurig for your tea 😀 ).

I still didnt feel like I was waking up like normal people because even though I slept until 6 (which felt like 5) its pretty early for a Sunday!

I used to run 6 days a week religiously, but over the last year I transitioned down to 5 days and that number feels right for now.

We both did treadmill runs this weekend! It sounds like yours was easier though. I just couldn’t get into it mentally, until almost the end!

Those cookies at the baby shower are adorable!

My treadmill run actually went pretty well! I never know how it will go, and some days its awful and some days I don’t mind it too much.

What a fun wkend! I don’t blame you taking a day off from running. I wouldn’t get up that early either. You had a good run on Friday. I’m happy that it’s going to stay lighter out later. So I can run after work now. Because as you know I am not a morning person anyway.

Yea, I figured I would try to get in a bit of a longer run on Friday since I knew I wouldnt be running on Saturday!

I miss the light in the mornings! I know soon enough it will be bright outside by 5 am but I prefer that to dark mornings. I don’t blame you for not running with that early of a flight!

I also would skip that 3am run in lieu of some extra sleep. What a fun way to spend the weekend celebrating with your friend and her family. I love Daylight Savings Time in the spring, but not as much in the fall because it means the start to darker days and nights.

    • [email protected] says

      March 14, 2016 at 7:53 pm

Ugh, the time change is a doozy. But it was nice Sunday morning when I was at the grocery store–no one else was there, which made for a great shopping experience! I typically run 4 days a week but upped it to 5 with my training schedule. It’s definitely been more challenging, but I’d still like to run 5 days/week after my training is over!

    • [email protected] says

      March 14, 2016 at 7:54 pm

Thats nice to have the grocery store to yourself! 5 days a week of running usually works well for me- I can fit in a full rest day and a strength training day.

Congrats on your higher mileage week! I actually like Daylight Savings because I’m more of a post-work, evening runner so the extra light helps me out. The first week after setting the clocks back has me in zombie state though. Looks like the baby shower was so much fun!

We haven’t had a snowfall since the day Callum was born over two years ago! Everyone thinks Canada is a winter wonderland but not so. We used to get tonnes of snow when I was a kid, but global warming, I guess. Kinda scary. Great job on your week last week. Tempo runs are OUCH.

My thoughts on the time change are best summed up by : NOPE.

Love that it was light so late last night. HATE that my body has no idea what’s going on & it was pitch black when I woke up to workout this morning. It usually takes my body a week or two to catch up & realize it’s permanent.

    • [email protected] says

      March 14, 2016 at 7:57 pm

It takes me awhile too! Its definitely a tough transition!

  16. Michele @ paleorunningmomma says

I hate the time change making it dark again in the morning 🙁 When I’m marathon training and have a run longer than 13 miles I usually run 5 days, but otherwise 6 is good especially if there’s a short run in there like 3-4 miles. Great week especially working around the traveling!

    • [email protected] says

      March 14, 2016 at 7:59 pm

Wait… did we fly to Boston the same day? Haha I was on the 6:30 flight to Boston Saturday morning… I’m all about the warm weather but it was a rude awakening landing back in Baltimore this morning to a cool drizzle. Hopefully we’re only a few weeks away from spring!

    • [email protected] says

      March 14, 2016 at 8:00 pm

That’s so funny! My flight was Saturday at 6:30 too. I thought I was the only person crazy enough to fly that early! After the nice weather last week this rain and cooler weather is kind of a let down.

I’m a morning runner so it’s dark again now. I don’t mind though because I run in my neighborhood. It just takes time to adjust to the clock change. You logged a lot of miles this week. Right now I’m running 4 times a week. I’d like to do 5, but I’m trying to be prudent after injury. Is that a Cat In The Hat themed shower? Very unique. Thanks for linking with us Lisa.

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
