Weekly Recap 7/27-8/2

Is anyone else shocked that July is over already? The summer is going way too fast. Which means fall marathons are getting closer. I am starting to formulate a plan- and thank you all so much for your comments and suggestions in Thursday’s post! I have been away from the blog-world since Wednesday due to a conference that took up a lot more time than a regular workday. I had to commute 30 minutes (which is 28 minutes longer than my usual commute) and then rush hour traffic on the way home made for a long and stressful two days. By the time I got home both days I just wanted to do nothing. Except drink wine.

So this weekend I am planning to catch up on the blogs I missed and respond to comments!

Anyway, here’s the weekly recap from last week:

Week of 7/27-8/2:

Sunday 7/27- Rest

Monday 7/28- 5 miles with no garmin, Runner’s core DVD

garminless run

Tuesday 7/29- 6 miles with middle 4 at tempo pace (garmin was all over the place)

tempo run

Wednesday 7/30-AM: November Project (which included 3000m run in 12:50 plus run to get there), Runner’s Core DVD PM: 2.16 easy miles (9:16 pace) So let’s just say I ran a total of 4 miles this day

Thursday 7/31- 30 minute elliptical, Body Pump

Friday 8/1- 3.25 easy miles (9:27 pace)

fri easy run

Saturday 8/2- 11 miles (8:51 pace)

watch

Total: 29.25

This week was all over the place. I started Monday thinking I was injured, but have felt fine since. I ended up not relying on the garmin much but I actually was able to update it and I think its better now! November Project challenged my muscles in a new way and I was sore through Friday- probably from a combination of November Project, Body Pump, and getting some intense ART on Wednesday. But it was a good sore.

I think I am going to start training for the Philadelphia the week of 8/17, which gives me two weeks to keep building my base. However, next Saturday I’ll be running the Charles St 12 and I am thinking about running it hard(ish) to get an idea of where my fitness is right now for longer races. But we will see.

How were your workouts this week?

What type of workouts make you the most sore?

What are you looking forward to in August?

So you know I was spur sore too… I’m glad I wasn’t the only one! It’s amazing how little differences in a workout makes such a noticeable change in how you feel. I know I haven’t pushed my body like that since…the last November project? Haha anyways I had the same thoughts as you about Charles 12. I was originally running it easy but I’ve been feeling good with my running so I kind of want to see what I can do. It’s a hard course from what I’ve heard but it’s the perfect debut for fall races!

I’m thinking for the Charles St 12 if I can survive the first 5 miles then I’ll push the pace for the rest…since I think last portion is all downhill. I don’t think I’ll be coming to November Project this week because if I’m that sore again there is no way I’ll be able to run fast on Saturday!

Awesome long run! My long run this week was 10 miles and while it was slow and dark, it was glorious.
I’m looking forward to the Chuck 12 next weekend! I would love to run into you (and Sarah!) at the start/finish 🙂 I’m also looking forward to moving to New York.

We should definitely meet up at the race! Will you have a phone on you? I just followed you on twitter so we can get in touch closer to the race!

I love the picture of the wine with the foam roller. Two wonderful things together in one shot! I had a nice 13 miler today. It was a little misty, but that helped cut the humidity. I took a scenic route and went out with a friend. It was really nice!

Sounds like a great run! And wine and foam rolling go together very well:)

Love the picture of the red wine next to your foam roller 😉 . My workouts this week were great. I took off one more day than I had planned just because of pure laziness lol, but I’m back on track now. As for August, I’m most looking forward to my cousin’s wedding on the 16th. I’m MOH and it’s gonna be a great time!

It sounds like that wedding will be a fun time! I love weddings but last year I had way too many so its been nice to have a little break.

Ah, I’ve spent many hours on the floor with that same foam roller and an alcoholic beverage in my hand. Looks like a great week, and great news that your hamstring feels fine!

Our weekly workouts have been really similar lately, even the time of day and everything! Excited to start my Mararthon training even though the first week is what I’ve been doing lately 🙂

      August 3, 2014 at 8:47 pm

That’s kind of how I feel! I’m not gonna start training for 2 weeks but I think my workouts had been very similar to how training will look- just with longer long runs. But I think that is a really good thing because it means we are ready for training!

I had an injury scare of my own, but to close out the week (and keep me from racing, boo). Here’s to hoping that we are both A-OK for the long run, literally and figuratively.
I think that you should use the wine bottle AS your roller–especially if it is white wine, haha.

I just read your post a little while ago about your hamstring! I’m so sorry to hear that. I really hope it is just a twinge like (I think) mine was. Very smart of you to not race although I’m sure it was frustrating to back out.
And I love that foam roller suggestion! As long as an empty wine bottle will work- because we both know that wine bottle is not staying full for very long:)

So glad you didn’t end up hurt! You ended up with a great week, which is awesome!

As for August, we were at Syracuse for a college visit and one of the advisors kept referring to things happening in late summer, i.e. August, and then correcting herself saying ‘later this month’. So yeah, we’re all off a bit … 🙂

Haha, I know, I am so thrown off that its already the beginning of August and the summer is just flying by!

That’s so funny, we’re going to be starting training plans at the same time :). Except mine is for a half. Anything exercise that involves any type of jumping I get super sore for the next few days! Crazy that it’s already August, but I can’t say I’m not already excited for fall 🙂

      August 5, 2014 at 1:32 pm

Isn’t exciting to get started with a new training cycle?! Usually my excitement wears off by week 3, haha.
And yes jumping kills my legs…I don’t think I have ever done box jumps and I think that is what did me in last week!

I really want to try this out tomorrow, but I also want to get in my 6 mile run.. Do you think it would be fine to do the run and then this group? Or…?

      September 1, 2015 at 6:30 pm

I’m not sure…I think they change it every week and I haven’t been in a year. I do think they do some running each week, so maybe run a little less if you are gonna go?

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
