What a week it’s been. Between adjusting to the time change, election stress, and spiking COVID numbers, it felt like it was just one thing after another. When it doubt, run it out. Or something like that. The beginning of the week feels like it was a month ago. Oh and it went from feeling like winter with temps in the 30s and 25 mph winds to feeling like summer with warm 70 degree days. What is happening?

Workout Schedule
If you were looking closely at my workouts you may have noticed that I didn’t do any strength training this week (other than core work). I’m between phases of my strength programs so I just decide to take the week off while I wait for the next one. I think it’s good to take a little break once in awhile. The longest I ever go without lifting is 1 week and it only happens a few times a year.
Wild Weather
The weather was all over the place this week! It seems other places were the same. On Monday and Tuesday it was super windy. The kind of wind that can wake you up from your sleep. I ran on the treadmill Monday because my only time to run was at 5 am. On Tuesday I was off for Election Day so I went out for a stroller run but we waited until around 8:30. It was still windy but the temps were warmer, so it wasn’t too bad.
By the weekend we had temps in the mid 70s. It felt amazing! The mornings were still in the high 40s. so perfect for running. Between the nice weather and the fall colors it was a good weekend to be outside.
Solo Miles
I really enjoyed my solo miles outside this week. I felt like I needed that time to either think or completely zone out. It was also nice to be able to see the sunrise on Saturday morning. I feel like it’s been awhile since I had seen a nice sunrise.
Who knows what the coming weeks will bring, but we are almost to the end of 2020! We’ve gotta stay positive, right? And when in doubt, run it out!

I always do some kind of training, but definitely cut back on strength periodically. This was a deload week for me. SJ programs them into my training. I do the same thing with running. It’s so important to give your body a break. As nice as this weather is and as tempting as it is to push myself to enjoy, I know that I can’t do that safely. Today was a total rest day and it felt all right to be a sloth!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Those total rest days can feel really nice! When the weather is nice on a rest day I like to get out for a walk. Last Sunday it was cold and rainy so that was a very lazy rest day for me.
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
Unfortunately I take all too many breaks from strength training…but yes it makes sense to take a breather once in a while. I know how much I benefit when I take cutback weeks in running, so it makes sense that strength would be the same. Congrats on running it out!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Since I follow a strength training plan I’m pretty good about sticking with it. But it’s definitely nice to back off once in awhile!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Even if you took a break from strength training, you still got some good runs in! I had a great week of workouts also and two fun bike rides this weekend. On Saturday we rode from Leesburg to Sugarloaf Mountain and up to see the views and today we went gravel grinding in western Loudoun County. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect!
I usually only take a break from strength training whenever I have to have a skin cancer removed and I’m forced to take a break while the stitches are still in. That’s usually once or twice a year and my next surgery is December 8th…
Hope you have a great week!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Those rides sound so nice, especially in the warm weather! That makes sense about the strength training. I hope your next procedure goes well!
Deborah Brooks says
you sure got some great runs in this week! Glad to see you had a rest day too. Great job in your long run! I agree taking a week off is good sometimes.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! It turned out to be a good week to run a little more and back off on the strength training.
Kim G says
This really has been the craziest and longest week I’ve experienced – so many emotions and temperature changes!
You had a great week of workouts and I’m glad you were able to get in a long run and rest day despite all the craziness of the week.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thank you! It was definitely one of those weeks that I was appreciative of being able to just go for a run and clear my mind!
Kimberly Hatting says
I took a break from focused strength-training this week, too…but my legs still got in plenty of strength action on the bike. With the wind (except for Thursday), my legs had that jelly-like post-workout thing going on LOL At least it was a warm wind!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Haha I could probably say the same for my windy stroller run on Tuesday! Maybe I did get in some strength training after all!
Chocolaterunsjudy says
I finally got in one light ST sesh last week, LOL! Although the Yoga I do in the mornings truly are a bodyweight workout. Last week’s targeted the arms and back a lot and man I really felt it!
I don’t usually take a break from ST, actually, I think that’s really important — but it’s not all heavy lifting either.
I truly forgot about the colder weather earlier in the week. I was recuperating from the last few weeks!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Some yoga sessions have left me really sore! And I know what you mean about forgetting about the cooler weather. It feels so long ago!
Coco says
Wow, that last photo is gorgeous! I tried to chase sunrise runs last week, but Scooby got impatient. I am trying to take advantage of shorts weather for as long as it lasts!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Me too! I love when I can get away with wearing shorts through December.
Darlene S Cardillo says
The beginning of the week was awful but it nicely warmed up…
I don’t do any ST so I don’t have to worry about a break lol
You did get in a lot of runs….it’s so nice to be outdoors.
I have a real half next weekend – the weather looks awful but too soon to predict. I’m hoping I get through it without being frustrated about my slow pace. My goal is just love the run and continue do do more walking and hiking.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Good luck in your half! Hopefully the weather cooperates.
Jenn says
You rock!
Last week, we started out with gorgeous cool temps, and then moved right back to hot and humid. Now we are bracing for the outlying bands of a freaking hurricane, because of course we would be, this late in the year in 2020.
I am super inconsistent with my strength training anyway. I should be better, but I keep saying that.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
It does seem late in the year for a hurricane! Hopefully it won’t be too bad. I’m sure it will cool off everywhere soon enough.
Marcia says
Great miles for you this week! Glad running is there when we need and this past week was a doozy. I rarely if ever take a complete break from running or strength but I definitely lighten it up and shorten my runs. Sometimes by a lot. It does a body good!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! Yes, its so important to take lighter weeks and full breaks can be good too. But sometimes it feels like we just need those workouts to make it through the week.
Michelle D. says
You had a great week of running! Especially important given the rollercoaster this week was!
I find a break from both running and strength work every now and then is helpful – I always come back feeling fresher.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Agreed! Taking a break can be both mentally and physically refreshing.
Zenaida Arroyo says
Thank goodness for running! I know you know what I mean. So much going on and running is always there for me to zone out and “forget” some of the things that are going on right now.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Yes! Its a nice way to get your mind off of everything and just take some time to yourself.
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
I have been trying to keep up on the strength training. I did a good job of it this summer with my morning bootcamp but I’m still trying to get back in the rhythm now. Very pretty sunrise picture!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
It can be tough to make time for strength when all we want to do is run! But now that its a habit I feel like its weird when I skip a week.
