5 Snacks for any Time of Day

As usual, I have been snacking as much as ever. I think I just have a hard time eating enough at breakfast and lunch to hold me over to the next meal. So I always plan to have a snack on hand between those meals, and sometimes after dinner too! I’ve gotten really tired of Lara Bars (I have been eating one a day for a few years now…) so I have been looking into other snacks that are easy to make and can be taken with me on the go.

5 Snacks for Any Time of Day

For this week’s Friday Five, I thought I would share 5 snacks I have recently discovered that would be great for any time of day!

1. No Bake Granola Bars

These are a perfect morning snack, and I have made them twice in the past month. They are so good that I would even eat them as a dessert!

2. Peanut Butter Protein Balls

I haven’t tried these yet, but I love the short ingredient list. They looks great for a quick on-the-go snack, and you really can’t go wrong with peanut butter!

3. Oatmeal Blueberry Chocolate Chip Muffins

I have made these muffins a few times, and while I usually eat them in the morning I think they would be great for later in the day too.

4. Beat the Heat Tropical Smoothie

I saw this smoothie recipe a few weeks ago and keep meaning to try it! I know that beets are really good for you but I don’t like the taste of eating them cooked. I have used them in smoothies before and don’t really taste them, so I definitely need to give this recipe a try!

  1. Hit the Trail Granola

I wanted to find either a trail mix or granola recipe, and then I discovered this recipe which combines them both!

Now that I have found all these delicious snack recipes, I am inspired to try something new and do some extra meal prep this weekend!

Which of these snacks looks good to you?

What are some of your favorite snacks?

All of these snacks look so so good! I am always making my own snacks as it’s cheaper – but also because it’s tastier too! That way I can make exactly what I want!

Exactly! It’s nice to have some packaged stuff on hand, but most of the time I prefer to make my own snacks.

I was just thinking that I never bak or make snacks anymore and really should! I was thinking to make one of my protein ball recipes especially since my son would like them too. great ideas!

I fell out of the habit a few months ago so it’s been good to get back into it. Now I seem to always have homemade snacks on hand!

I am a huge snacker. I eat a lot of lara bars too! My other favorites are individual greek yogurts, rice cakes with banana and PB, and baby carrots and hummus. All the things you listed above look delicious. Thanks for sharing my smoothie recipe!

I love carrots and hummus too! I used my make my own hummus all the time but I have totally forgotten about it lately!

Whaaaat?! You have to keep eating Lara Bars, I associate you with them! haha

I’ll need to give those no bake granola bars a try. I love the texture of no bake foods but so I don’t generally love the taste, haha!

Thanks for sharing my recipe! I snack a lot, especially when we hike or on long run days. Homemade no bake granola bars are one of my current favorites for snacking on the go. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

That’s exactly why it’s important to ALWAYS have snacks on hand:)

I’ve always grazed because it doesn’t matter what size breakfast or lunch I eat. I’m always hungry mid morning and mid afternoon, and snacks it is. I keep things like granola bars and mixed nuts for the morning, then a protein bar for mid afternoon before I workout. I use a few different brands for those so I don’t get bored.

    • [email protected] says

      May 13, 2016 at 6:52 pm

Mixed nuts make a great snack too! And it’s always nice to switch up protein bars, I get sick of them quickly when I eat the same ones.

I am a terrible snack person. I love snacks, all the snacks, nothing but the snacks but they’re not the healthiest choices. I’ve started eating baby carrots every day in the afternoon when I’m really hungry just to force more veggies down the hatch. I didn’t know you could eat raw beets! I always assumed we had to cook them first. Duh.

    • [email protected] says

      May 13, 2016 at 6:53 pm

I don’t know much about beets but I have used them in smoothies without cooking them and I didnt really notice the taste. I just peeled, cut, and froze until I was ready to use them. Baby carrot are a great (healthy!) snack but I always forget about them!

  9. Alyssa @ renaissancerunnergirl says

    May 13, 2016 at 10:31 am

My favorite snacks tend to be whole foods/high protein because just an apple or banana or Larabar won’t hold me over long. For sweet, it’s the banana or apple with PB (pre run), apple with string cheese, baby carrots or celery sticks paired with string cheese or jerky, or a Greek yogurt if I have something to keep it cool!

      May 13, 2016 at 6:54 pm

I love anything with PB as a snack!

  10. Jen B. says

I love making protein balls as a snack! My fave has a combination of rolled oats, brown rice protein powder, honey, vanilla, cinnamon, and chocolate chips. Yum!

That sounds like a great combo!

All these snacks look so tasty. I am boring and always buy prepackaged ones. Need to start making my own. Much healthier and cheaper I’m sure.

      May 13, 2016 at 6:54 pm

I do think it’s cheaper to make these kinds of snacks, especially because I already have most of the ingredients I need!

I’m a snacker–I’m always hungry–and I need to do a better job of bringing homemade snacks. Usually I grab a yogurt or a Luna bar.

    • [email protected] says

      May 13, 2016 at 6:56 pm

I think those are good options! I don’t love yogurt (my stomach isn’t great with dairy) but I do think it’s a great snack. I may start trying it again, sticking to the plain kind and adding my own toppings.

  15. Sonia says

    May 13, 2016 at 5:57 pm

I’m snacking too. My latest is celery, carrots and hummus and apples with sunbutter. I tried beets in my smoothie and although I liked them (you can easily overdo it) the hubs wasn’t a fan.

    • [email protected] says

      May 13, 2016 at 6:57 pm

I think the key is following a good recipe so the other ingredients balance out any taste of the beets. Good to know though, I guess it’s not for everyone!

  16. Elaine says

    May 13, 2016 at 6:58 pm

My kids and I like to make the PB energy balls (without the protein powder) – ingredients are actually similar to the no bake granola bars. Also like to bake banana choc chip muffins or a pumpkin bread with choc chips. These are all with my kids in mind! What’s the easiest for me is cottage cheese with a handful of berries or veggies with hummus.

All of those snacks sounds so good! And veggies with hummus is a great, healthy and easy snack!

Totally agree! I don’t find fruit to be as filling as some of the snacks I listed here but I definitely try to snack on it at least once a day.

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
