Instead of New Year’s Resolutions this year, I set some running intentions back in January to help me work towards some bigger goals as I am returning to running postpartum. I usually set goals at the start of the year but I don’t always check in on them throughout the year. So now that we are halfway through the year I thought this would be a good time to do 6 month check-in and see how they are going!
6 Month Check-In on my 2024 Running Intentions
In my original post, I shared that I have quite a few postpartum running intentions as a mom of two. Many are not related to running, so I only shared a few in that post. “This year I decided to make a lot very small goals. Things that are specific and measurable and that will help to set me up for success long term. I also have a combination of process goals and outcome goals. I find that setting my intentions this way will help me to accomplish more over the course of the year.” Let’s see how it’s going!
Postpartum Running Intention # 1: Run a sub 22:30 5k
I accomplished this in May! Back in March I started doing 5k time trials, and my times were 22:49 in March, 22:29 in May, and 22:00 in June. I hope to keep chipping away at these times this year!
Postpartum Running Intention # 2: Run a Half-Marathon
I ran my first postpartum half-marathon on March 9th! While my intention was to just run the distance, I was able to run a real race and did pretty well (considering it was raining and windy). I’m planning to run my next half in September!
Postpartum Running Intention #3: Start doing drills 1x/week
For some reason I am never good about sticking to this goal! Maybe I just truly don’t feel like drills are worth the time for me? I have been good about warm ups, strides, and post-run mobility, so maybe that is where I should direct my focus.
Postpartum Running Intention #4: Strength train 2x/week
I’ve done really well with this, and have even been getting in 3 sessions most weeks. I think it has really paid off with helping me to increase my mileage postpartum!
Postpartum Running Intention #5: Enjoy running!
So far so good with this! Even through the winter I’ve enjoyed running, but even more so now that the weather has been better and I’ve been doing almost all of my runs outside. It’s also been fun to challenge myself more and get in some harder runs!
Final Thoughts On My 6 Month Check-In
I’m starting to think about my goals for the fall which is exciting. I have a half planned in September and then I am consider a fall marathon. My hope is to decide by the end of this month because of price increases. One is local and smaller and the other is about 2 hours away but both are pretty flat. I’m thinking of sticking with the local one for now because logistically it’s easier than traveling with young kids but we’ll see. Most importantly I want to stay healthy and continue to enjoy running!

Oh wow, nice job on that 5k time trial!! With your consistent training, I’m sure you can go sub-22 minutes. Excellent job!
I love that you are aiming for a fall marathon. Is the local one also flat?
I missed my big A-Goal for 2024, which was the London Marathon. Now I am aiming for a marathon on 13 October. It’s flat and fast and perfect for qualifying for other, bigger marathons.

Great job on sticking with your intentions! And I hear you about drills. I have a hard time keeping them in my program too.

Look at you, out there crushing it!
I’m so proud of you hitting so many of the intentions you set.
I feel like this year has been such a whirlwind, that I don’t even know if I’ve hit my goals, but I’m going to fake it til I make it and go from there!
Excited to see what’s next for you!
