I Didn’t Run a Marathon This Weekend

I’m sure you already knew I didn’t run a marathon this weekend, but the weekend before Thanksgiving has seemed to be a “race weekend” for me since my first marathon in 2011. It hit me the other day that other than 2012 (when I had just gotten married) I always race the weekend before Thanksgiving. Even this year I was signed up for the Annapolis Running Classic Half Marathon. I wasn’t ready for it and didn’t want to risk re-injuring myself by running it, but there was definitely a part of me that was wishing I was racing this weekend. 

There were still lots of workouts that happened this week! It was one of those weeks of workouts that was all over the place. After my “off” week the previous week, I took a few days off running. I suddenly got this craving for yoga and ended up doing 20-30 minutes EVERY DAY this week! Can you believe that? I went from not opening up my yoga mat in months to practicing every day. I made time for it after work and before dinner, and it felt amazing to move and reset my mind and body after the work day. Not sure if I can keep it up, but I sort of regretted all that time I took away from yoga.

Weekly Recap: I Didn’t Run a Marathon This Weekend

Monday: 30 minutes spinning, PT exercises; PM: 30 minutes yoga

All I remember about this workout is I kicked my shin into the pedal as I was getting off the bike. Of course it was the side that had been hurt for months.

Spinning

Tuesday: Strength training, PM: 20 minutes yoga

I changed things up a bit with my strength training and felt it in my legs!  A little foam rolling plus the daily yoga definitely helped the loosen things up.

Wednesday: Pilates video; PM: 25 minutes yoga

The pilatesology video I tried was a really good one, and I will be going back to this one again over the next few weeks. However, I don’t think I am going to renew my membership after this month. I think it makes more sense to stick with free videos and the DVDs I own. 

Pilates

Thursday: 2.6 miles, PT exercises; PM: 30 minutes yoga

I finally made my way back outside for a run with the intention of doing 2-3 miles. It was much better than last week, but of course felt a little weird after 4 days off…also, I feel like it’s tough to get in a groove when running less than 3 miles. 

Thursday Run

Friday: Strength training, 15 minutes spinning; PM: 25 minutes yoga

Another strength training day! I did lots of lunges, pistol squats (with a bench), and regular squats. Also, upper body work while standing on the bosu and kettlebell swings. 

Strength Training

Saturday: 5 miles, PT exercises, 20 minutes yoga

I went out for my run without a real distance in mind but ended up doing 5. I was back from my run by 7:30 so did a yoga post-run video and some core work.

Saturday Run

Sunday: 40 minutes yoga

I did a flow that was supposed to be focused on the core but really worked my arms too. 

I guess the good thing about not running a marathon the Sunday before Thanksgiving is that I can actually run ON Thanksgiving this year! (Do you know that after my first marathon I ran a 10k on Thanksgiving 4 days later…not my smartest move!)

    I think at this point if I missed the long islahd half in may I would feel weird since I have run it 4 years in a row now! i never do a race on thanksgiving because they don’t have any more than a 5k distance around here which always annoys me. a 10k would be great!

      I did a 10k a few years ago and that was a great distance for Thanksgiving morning!

    What do you use for yoga? I need to get back into doing it regularlyand need to either find good videos or an app! Sorry you missed Annapolis. Not to make it worse but the weather this year was unreal. Not the typical cold and windy day it has been in the past. Don’t worry- the hills were still there 😐

      The weather Saturday was great but I felt bad for anyone racing on Sunday!
      For yoga I usually just go to Youtube and search for videos by Leslie Fightmaster.
      https://www.doyogawithme.com also has lots of free videos.

    You didn’t run a marathon, but after the year that you had, thank goodness you are running period, right? The most per week that I’ve practiced yoga was 4x and that was the first full year that we were here. But it helped that I worked at the studio and go the classes for free!

      I don’t think I would have been able to keep up with the yoga if I was going to a studio. Its so much easier to set aside a few minutes to practice at home! (Although not the same…I do miss studio classes)

    I definitely know what you mean about missing a race before Thanksgiving; that’s exactly how I felt when I purposely missed the Fort Lauderdale half earlier this month. I’ve done it every year since I became a runner, but I knew this year wouldn’t be a good one for me. I’m looking forward to picking up where I left off next year though! I bet you are hopeful about picking up next year too!

    I can imagine it feels weird not to race, but at least you’re staying injury free! I bet the week before Thanksgiving is a fun one to race and then take it easy during the holiday. I don’t plan on a Thanksgiving race this year but we do our own run on Thanksgiving.

      It has definitely been nice to take Thanksgiving week off from working out after running a marathon! Perfect time to eat and relax.

    Sounds like a solid week! My family and I are running a 5K on Thanksgiving, but after that I’m forcing myself to take a couple weeks off and see if I can get whatever is wrong with my hamstring to heal. Good luck on your run and happy Thanksiving!

    I DID race this weekend. I ran a local 5K after sort of taking the fall off from running // racing. I met my goal, got a new PR AND placed as the third overall female. So it was a GREAT race, and I think one I’ll be sure to run next year too!

    Always weird not running a race or time that is meant for running. It sounds though like the options were run and potentially get injured, or do the hard but smart thing and not run. So good for you for choosing smart.

    I will not be racing on Thanksgiving since I have to teach my class at the gym. Oh well that’s ok at least I am doing something. You seem to be doing a lot of yoga lately. I actually added a yoga for runner’s dvd to my Christmas list.

    Sounds like a great week of workouts. A week straight of yoga does the mind and body good. In fact, i’m craving one badly.

    I gave up on yoga, but I still stretch daily. I know my PT said foam rolling is best, so I do both. It seems to be working with my strength training because I’ve made good progress this fall.

      I typically prefer foam rolling to stretching but sometimes yoga just feels so good!

    Our big marathon weekend up here is on Canadian Thanksgiving, and that was the first marathon I ever ran so every Thanksgiving, that’s what I think about! It’s hard not running when it seems like everyone else is doing it. Nice job on the yoga every day! That is impressive. And I’m glad you’re liking your new stationary bike, although crappy about your shin. That’s totally something I would do.

    I’ll be running at some point this weekend. Gotta run off all that delicious food right lol.

    Don’t really have a go to weekend for running. All based on our schedule and if I can get the right training done.

    Love all of your workouts! I wish I could build a home gym so I can have all the equipment I need!

    I ran the Philly Marathon on Sunday and I’m not sure if I’m a big fan of having such a big race before Thanksgiving!

    It seems that your recovery continues to go well though I know it’s hard when you can’t race out there right now.

      Its really nice to have so much equipment at home! Now I just need to convince my husband that we need a treadmill:) I hope you can relax and enjoy Thanksgiving now that your race is over!

    Ouch. I’ve had a few mishaps with a bike pedal. They can do some damage. I still have a scar on my ankle. I know I should do more yoga. I know. I just don’t. It’s common for me to run a half (or full) the second weekend in January. I find it both stressful and stress relieving to run so many miles during the holidays! LOL. We all need a few days off from running for a reset. Since I’m now in “marathon cranky pants” mode, I look forward to a break mid January. Thanks for linking, Lisa.

      I like to run during the holidays but I find training or racing can get a bit stressful. You will definitely deserve that break in a few weeks!

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go! 

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
