Many of us are just bidding farewell to winter running, and have been waiting for spring running for months. Unfortunately it looks like we may be skipping over spring for the most part and heading right into summer! While it would have been nice to have time to adjust, I think we all sort of expected this. Really though, I think I’m ready for summer running. Here’s why.
1. Summer running clothes
Summer running means shorts, tank tops, and best of all NO hats, gloves, or other sorts of layers. Therefore, there is so much less laundry. It takes so much less time to get ready for a run in the summer! While spring running is nice, I find myself dressing incorrectly 90% of the time. I either end up overdressed or underdressed.
2. Sun
I’ve missed running in the sun and can really use some Vitamin D in my life. Even though it’s hot, it feels good to be outside running in the summer sun. Usually for me spring means lots of rain so I’m kind of happy to have skipped that part of spring!
3. Sweat
What is it about a good sweat that just makes you feel like you worked harder? I definitely sweat when I run inside on the treadmill, but I feel like it’s been awhile since I sweat while running outside. I know I will probably get sick of it quickly, but I am looking forward to a good sweat in the summer heat.
4. Challenge
Ever since my last 5k I haven’t really been doing any workouts. I think that by running in the heat it will be like an automatic challenge. Runs will feel harder but that’s ok. I think it will be good to push myself in a different way.
5. Daylight
I love that summer brings so much more light in the mornings. I’m excited to get outside pretty much any time after 5am and already see that the sun is up!
All of that being said, I know that this may be easier for me to say as someone who is not training for a long distance race. Summer running is a whole different ball game when there are 20 mile runs on the schedule!
If nothing else, I just want to get used to running in the heat. The back and forth between cool weather and heat can be so frustrating. There’s something to be said for consistency. (Ask me about this again in a month when I am desperate for some cooler weather!)

I’d love some spring running but am definitely enjoying the early daylight! I have to get up earlier on weekends to catch a runrise run.
It’s been nice that it’s light out so much this time of year!
I love the feeling of sweat pooring down my face! Give me the sun and heat! I run indoors all winter because a can’t stand the cold so I can’t wait for summer running
Hopefully you can run outside in the warm weather soon!
I love summer running too! I am a big fan of a good sweat. And less laundry is a plus too! I am training for a marathon this summer. Actually 2. I have one coming up in August (the Tunnel of Light in WA) and one in October (MCM). Gott get out early to get those long runs in before the sun starts really baking!
It’s really key to get out early for long runs in the summer!
While I am enjoying spring running and all the beautiful blooms and smells in my neighborhood, let’s face it, it’s so warm at this point at our neck in the woods that even though it is spring, it FEELS like summer. Now we get to reap the benefits of withstanding the cold winner. You and I are alike- we like the sun, sweat, and heat!
I feel like we totally deserve this nice weather after making it through the long winter!
I love summer reason for all the reasons you listed but it is hard! The heat always messes with my endurance. I am definitely a cold weather runner but I don’t want to be….
The heat definitely slows me down, but it feels good to be outside in the warmer weather!
I’m with ya. I am so ready for summer. I love not having to bundle up when running outside now. I am currently not training for anything so it is just nice to run whenever I feel like it and not feel like I have to get a certain amount of miles in.
Its really nice to no longer be wearing all those layers!
I think on of my favorite things about summer running is less laundry! Shorts and tanks seem to reduce my laundry by half compared to layers upon layers for each run.
I love how much less laundry there is in the summer!
Early daylight is the best! Not sure about the sun going down so late at night though, because my kids want to stay up late and then I only get about a half hour to myself before I have to go to bed!! I enjoy my alone time too 🙂
I bet thats tough! I still go to bed early even though the sun is out late:)
I am not quite ready for the humidity of summer running. I do love the daylight and the feeling of a good sweat. I do not love running long distances in the heat which is why I like to do tri races. I can mix things up on the bike
I bet tris are a great way to break things up during the summer heat!
I always feel good after a sweat session. I spent much of last summer on the treadmill, but I want to at least do my weekend runs outside, before it gets too warm. It would be a good way to start the day.
I really like the feeling of running outside in the summer and getting in a good sweat!
I always enjoy the light in the mornings during summer! Summers are usually less rainy around here as well, so it’s a nice time of year to run a lot outdoors.
Less rain is definitely nice! And I love having the extra daylight too.
