A Week of Tired Legs, Warm Weather, and Another Virtual Race

When I look back on this last week I can’t help but note my tired legs and the warm weather. Therefore, it probably wasn’t a great week for another virtual race! I can’t complain though. I’ve been asking for warmer weather for months now, and my plan lately has been to focus on strength by lifting heavier (leading to tired legs.). I think the virtual race just made these things more noticeable.

This was a week of tired legs, warm weather, and another virtual race. Heavier lifting left my legs tired and I was not prepared for the onset of heat and humidity. Check out the post to read more about my workouts from last week. #running #workouts #fitness

Weekly Run Down

Monday: Strength Training + 3.5 Stroller miles
Tuesday: Rest (Foam Rolling + Core)
Wednesday: 8 miles with UniverSOLE Virtual 10k
Thursday: Strength Training + Yoga
Friday: 3 Miles + Hip/Glute Exercises
Saturday: 7 Miles
Sunday: 3 Stroller Miles

Memorial Day Workout

We were off for Memorial Day so it was nice to have Rob home for another day and to not have to work! I did my strength training early in the morning, and then after breakfast we went out for a stroller run. This probably started off the tired legs. It was my 5th day in a row of running and I had done 9 miles the previous day. It was nice to get out for some family exercise.

Strength Training

I increased my weights for almost all of my exercises this week, and I really felt it. I even wrote last week how this is a good time to focus on strength and not worry as much about running, but I found it really made my runs feel harder. I think may need to lower my mileage until I adjust to the heavier weight.

UniverSOLE Virtual 10k

I did another virtual 10k that was held by my local running store. I decided to do this on Wednesday, after a rest day on Tuesday. I didn’t expect to still be feeling Monday’s workouts.

It was 65 degrees but the humidity was 90% or more. When I first started my warm up I felt really good and didn’t notice the humidity. As soon as I started running hard it really started to affect me. I was hoping to run close to my previous virtual 10k time, but I also knew I would need to factor in the conditions. I ended up running 47:03, which was about 30 seconds slower than my virtual 10k in April.

Weekend Running

I went into this weekend with no real plan. That’s part of the problem with not training for anything! One minute I wanted to do a long run and the next minute I was reminding myself that this was a tough week and I should really take it easy. I settled on 7 miles on Saturday, keeping an easy pace.

On Sunday I figured I would see how I felt and head out for a stroller run “later” in the morning- (like 6:45 lol). I took Grayson out in the stroller and we did 3 miles. We looped back home and picked up Rob to come with us for a short walk. The weather was amazing!

I’m signed up for the Brooks run!
For me running and strength are yin and yang.
When my miles are up, I must go lighter on the weights or I get injured. Lately my miles have been up and the weight is lighter. That will soon change!

That’s a good plan! I have been saying I will lower my mileage while I lift heavier but for some reason its still surprising to me how tired my legs have felt.

I can’t believe it, but I had completely forgotten about Global Running Day. Thanks for the reminder and link to the Brooks event!

I’m in for the Brooks run too! I’m staring at my training plan for Ice Age, which starts today. It’s nice to have a plan! There will still be strength training, but the focus will be on endurance, not as much on heavy lifting. So in answer to your question, yes–I do switch things around depending on my focus. I do plan on a heavy lifting cycle again this fall.

I think its really good to switch things up like that! Hopefully all the strength you’ve worked on will help you with your endurance training.

I definitely short change my strength training in favor of running. It is what it is…. This is the 2nd year in a row that Global Running Day falls on a rest day but I’m feeling some FOMO so I might get out for a short, easy run.

Sounds like a good plan! I like to schedule my workouts around days like that:)

Great week of workouts, especially that 10k in the humidity! The humidity was killer this week. I can handle mileage (if I am used to it) when strength training, but I do have to back off of hard workouts.

The humidity came out of nowhere and I wasn’t ready for it!

The crazy humidity last week was NOT appreciated! It was like we went from Spring to muggy summer weather overnight. Today seems to be better so let’s hope the weather continues to cooperate this week 🙂

I am participating in a 24 hr relay on Global Running Day which should be fun!

The break from the humidity has been nice, but Im sure it won’t last for long! That relay sounds like alot of fun!

Thank you for posting that about the Global Running Day, Lisa.
I signed up for it and I’ll do it on Wednesday.
You know, 47:03 for a 10k in hot and humid weather is awesome!! And with Monday’s strength training in your legs – that definitely makes you slower. Well done!

Thank you! Glad you will be doing the 5k on Wednesday!

I’m excited for Global Running Day (duh LOL), but I’ll be doing my usual early morning 5-miler. The forecast is looking decent…at the moment.

Its supposed to get really hot here on Wednesday but Im hoping the early morning isn’t too bad!

I just treated my virtual race as a harder training run, and that worked for me. It’s not really like I’m doing anything super hard right now, really. Just trying to stay fit.

The weather stays weird. I usually meditate after doing Yoga, but after about an hour of Yoga outside it was too darn cold to sit still to meditate out there! So weird! But I enjoy a *brief* break from last week’s heat.

The weather really is crazy right now! I have to check the weather every time I go outside because I dont know if I should wear a t-shirt or a sweatshirt.

Ugh, I rarely strength train so I just run what I am supposed to. I am working with someone now so he tells me what to run each day.

I ended up not running on Global Running Day. I told myself that I would run just 1 mile. I slept in because I was very tired and then it was one thing after another and ended up not running.

It happens! I’m sure you will make up for it another day.

19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 to 19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 total feet of elevation gain. Amazing weather. Listened to Life of a Showgirl on the treadmill and had some podcasts saved for my outside run but couldn’t get my headphones to connect. This was challenging by the end and I kept thinking how hard it would be if I needed to run another 7 miles today (and all miles at a faster pace) but this is why we train. Feeling like I’m in a good place with 6 weeks to go! How was your run today? #run #marathontraining #longrun
