I’m sure most of you can relate when I say this was another snowy, icy, cold week of workouts. But I’m not here to complain. The workouts still got done and we are one week closer to spring. Let’s dive in and see how the week played out.
Weekly Run Down: Another Snowy, Icy, Cold Week of Workouts
Monday: 6.5 Treadmill Miles with Hill Intervals
Tuesday: 4.25 Treadmill Miles and Strength Training
Wednesday: 6 Miles with 6 x 800 at 5k Pace
Thursday: 4.25 Treadmill Miles and Strength Training
Friday: Rest Day
Saturday: 7.2 Miles
Sunday: 4 Miles + Core/Hip Exercises
Snowy, Icy, Cold Week
When we last left off last week, it was snowing on Sunday. It came down hard and fast, but then turned to rain and most of it washed away that day! I didn’t run outside Monday or Tuesday because so much snow had melted that I knew there would be icy spots since it was still so cold out. On Wednesday night we got more snow- about 4-5 inches. Then on Saturday night we had an ice storm. So now those 4-5 inches of snow are now nicely coated with a layer of ice.
5k Training
I’m supposed to be training for a 5k but the weather the last 2 weeks has made it challenging. I struggle to do speedwork on the treadmill so I’m been incorporating hills instead. Based on my heart rate I am not getting the same intensity of workouts, but it’s better than nothing.
At least this week I got outside for my speed workout. We had a break in the snow and it was in the mid 20s on Wednesday. I did 6 x 800s, which I had also done a few weeks ago, this time with a shorter recovery time. Let me just tell you, 1 minute of recovery feels like nothing when you are doing 800s. I hit all my splits except one so I was happy about that.
Long Run
My long run wasn’t very long this week- 7 miles. I was glad to get it done outside even though it was a little icy. It was in the low to mid 20s, but actually felt pretty warm. Crazy how our perspective on winter temps changes as the months go on!
Sleep Struggles
We’ve all been having sleep issues around here- well, me and Grayson at least. A few days this week I work up well before my alarm- like between 2:45 and 3:15 am, and couldn’t fall back to sleep. Of course when that happens I’m tired all day and just want to go to bed at like 7.
Meanwhile Grayson has been skipping his naps every few days. He will either has a nice long 2 hour nap, or refuse to nap at all. It seems like if he sleeps until 6 or later he won’t nap. I know some kids start dropping their naps early, but I’m hoping this is just a phase. He isn’t getting enough sleep at night to not need a nap. (And I need that break in the day, especially while I am working from home!)
Fully Vaccinated
I got my second dose of the vaccine on Thursday! My arm was sore that night, and I felt a little tired and achy on Friday, but nothing too bad. I was really worried after hearing some stories about how terrible some people felt after it. I mean it would be worth it anyway, but feeling sick and watching a toddler all day is not fun.
Now I just need to figure out when I’m going to do this 5k. I was hoping to do it next weekend, but at this point it’s really going to depend on the weather.

Lots of cold weather and snow here, but thankfully not too much ice.
Sorry to hear about your sleeping issues – I hope that this week goes much better for you. So great to hear that you got the second dose of the vaccine and are now fully vaccinated! Thats good that your side effects were mild – I’ve heard a few horror stories!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I was really worried that I would feel pretty awful, so I was so glad that it wasn’t bad at all!
Chocolaterunsjudy says
We had some snow, definitely cold, but nothing too bad. Next week is a different story!
I’m so sorry about the sleep troubles. I am not a happy camper when I don’t get enough sleep. Yes, sometimes I wake up & can’t back to sleep, but thankfully not too often. I usually stay in bed — rest is still good!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I try to stay in bed too. That usually only lasts for so long before I get restless and feel like I might as well get up and start the day!
Deborah Brooks says
Sleep issues with a toddler-I do remember those struggles! You did get in some nice mileage this week despite the weather challenges. Hope you all have a great week. Yay on your vaccine still waiting for my turn over here
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
The toddler struggles are frustrating but I know they won’t last forever. Hope you can get the vaccine soon!
Kimberly Hatting says
Sounds like everyone was hit with nasty weather this week! I don’t mind a day or two of extreme temps, but we’re going on almost two weeks as I type….UGH. At least most of us have indoor options…
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
It’s definitely been a rough few weeks with no breaks from it! Yes, I’m so grateful for indoor options.
Wendy says
I’m struggling to get my miles in as well! I’m eyeballing a half in April but at this rate, I will not have any long runs! Hopefully, things will turn around, weather-wise for everyone in the next week or so!
Grayson is pretty young to drop his nap, so hopefully, it’s just a phase and he’ll get back to his naps soon!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I really hope so! On the days he doesn’t nap he is sooo overtired by the end of the day and ready for bed by like 6.
I agree about the weather. Hopefully by March we will turn a corner and be done with all the snow and extreme cold.
Jenny says
Oof- I remember those days. Sleeping and toddlers do not go well together. Sounds like you had a good week of workouts though- I’m looking forward to hearing about the 5k!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Every time we start to get in a good rhythm with sleep something changes and he either starts waking super early or his naps are messed up! I am hoping I can get the 5k done this week. If not, Ill just push it back to next week.
Jessie says
yay for being vaccinated! how exciting. Glad you had a mild reaction.
Great job getting in some outdoor miles! Unfortunately I was on the treadmill for all of mine..I’m ready for spring!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thank you! I hope your weather warms up a bit soon so you can get back outside for some of your runs.
Coco says
Great workouts. LOL on the 20s feeling warm, but I know you do get used to certain temperatures. Yay on your second dose of vaccine but ugh on the sleep. Mon and Tues I woke up before my alarm, but just 4:30/4:45 so it wasn’t too bad.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Isn’t it funny how we can feel like 4:30 isn’t too bad for waking up early? I know other people would think that sounds crazy! But I totally understand.
Marcia says
Both of my kids were pretty poor nappers so I feel you. The struggle is real. My mom send me pics of the snow in Chicago and I thank my lucky stars we made it to Florida at the perfect time. 800s are tough! Probably my least favorite interval.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
At this point I would rather him sleep less at night and still nap during the day, because I need that break so bad! Yea 800s are so tough. I do think they’re good for 5ks though. At least mentally I feel like I’m getting more comfortable holding harder paces.
Michelle D. says
Snow and ice seem to be the theme this week! Sorry about your sleep struggles – hard enough when it’s just you, but throw a toddler in the mix and it’s definitely a challenge. You did a great job with your workouts this week despite the challenges! And, yay for being fully vaccinated!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! Yea, luckily its not every day but the days when it happens are rough!
Cari says
Snowy, icy here too just a few hours north, although I don’t know where your ice storm went as it luckily didn’t wander up north. What a relief to be fully vaccinated. Hope you & Grayson both get better sleep this week
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Glad the ice storm didn’t make its way to you! I’m hearing there will be more freezing rain tonight and then maybe more snow later in the week. Hopefully warmer weather will make an appearance soon!
Jenn says
Yay for dose 2!
I constantly wake up at 3-4am and that’s it for me. I’m an insomniac, and my anxiety just doesn’t let me get a ton of hours It’s one of my least charming qualities.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
That’s so hard. I know I do best when I wake up at the same time every day and can get into a good routine, but lately that just hasn’t happened. And if I try to sneak in a nap it really throws off my nighttime sleep.
Zenaida Arroyo says
Our weather has been awful too. We got more snow today. Glad you got that second vaccine. I’ve also been hearing “horror” stories about it but hope my mother and I react well to it. My cats wake me up early to eat. Sometimes I get up to do some work and other times I manage to go back to sleep. I’ve been hearing about Beam. Have you heard of it?
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I’ve heard a little bit about it but need to look into it more. I hope that you and your mom do well with the vaccine!
Liz Dexter says
Congratulations on getting your second vaccine. I only know one person here in the UK who has had both theirs. It’s been snowy here which is not common, but thankfully not too icy – I’m not training for anything at the moment but I do like (need) to get out regularly.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thank you! The snow isn’t uncommon for here either, but it does seem like we have been hit with bad weather (snow, ice, or extreme cold) every few days lately. It definitely feels good to get outside when possible (and safe!)
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
Yes! Congrats on shot #2. I was really unprepared last fall when the weather started changing for how it would affect my training. After several weeks on the treadmill it’s getting fairly easy to get normal mileage but my body isn’t quite ready to tackle speed work on the mill yet. I am pretty certain that this will be another inside week but I’m really hoping to get outside for at least a few runs after that.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
At this point I’m happy if I can get out 1-2 times a week. My mileage has been pretty steady the past month or so, which I’m happy with. It’s not my highest but I also knew it wouldn’t be right now because my focus is on the 5k, so my long runs aren’t very long.
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Ugh, I hear you on the sleep issues. I’ve been waking up around 1:30 AM and staying awake for a half hour or so. It’s very frustrating, especially since I get up so early to workout or to see clients.
The ice storm hit here on Saturday morning right as my kids were out moving our youngest from Arlington to Reston. I was so nervous with them being out on the roads, but they said the roads were pretty clear except for the side streets.
Yay for getting your second vaccination! Does this mean that you can go back into the office now?
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
That’s scary about the ice storm! Glad it wasn’t too bas as they were moving. It didn’t get bad here until later in the day.
Our offices are just slowly starting to open up. I’ll probably be going in once or twice a week, but everything I do will still be virtual for the time being.
Renée @runlaugheatpie says
wow you and the ‘mill are really forming a close relationship it seems! ugh on the weather! we had all of it in one week’s time and now it’s thawing. but I do not have the motivation to run on the treadmill. I managed exactly one run. I suppose when runniing is more regular to me I will make different decisions. I hope in any case you can find the time and place to do your 5K NOT on the mill!!
Hoping for you that Grayson’s sleep schedule is just a phase right now. And glad you were able to get your second shot!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thank you! We are supposed to get more snow tomorrow so I’m not sure when I’ll be able to do the 5k. I don’t plan on doing it on the treadmill though- I would rather wait until next week and do it outside!
