Friday Favorites {Running Products, House Stuff, and New Foods}

Happy Friday! Today I am sharing some random Friday favorites. They’re not all “products” but just things I have been liking (or tolerating) lately. You will see what I mean.

I’ve struggled a bit to think of Friday posts now that we don’t have a theme to follow (anyone else get writer’s block by the end of the week?) I even tried drafting posts over the weekend but for some reason I just haven’t had much to write about lately. So this will be sort of random, but hopefully easy to read on a Friday!

Friday Favorites:

1) I just started reading Let Your Mind Run: A Memoir of Thinking My Way to Victory by Deana Kastor. So far I really like it! All of the books I have read this year are running books. I know I ask this all the time, but does anyone have a book recommendation? I am always willing to read a running book but I am much pickier about other kinds of books.

2) I bought a new medal display from Etsy! I have a smaller one that I never hung up but I realized it won’t fit all my medals and bibs. So I wanted to get a second one so that I can hang them next to each other. Now, I just need to get Rob to hang them up for me…

3) We are getting our master bedroom closet redesigned! We had a small but decent sized walk-in closet off our master bath, but we share it and the space is not set up very well. There is a lot of unused space. We had someone come in to give us a quote a few weeks ago and we decided to go for it! It’s a space we use all the time so i think it will be totally worth it.

4) It’s finally deck weather! Is there anything better than sitting outside on a warm day with a book and a glass of wine? I will probably get through the book I’m reading much faster if this weather continues!

5) Ok, so this is the one I’m “tolerating”. I’ve never really liked avocados, mostly because of the texture. I even wrote about it on my blog over 3 years ago! So Rob likes them and has been buying them more, and I know they are really healthy and I don’t include much fat in my diet. So I have been trying to eat them once in a while and they are getting better! I think the key is to eat them when they aren’t too soft. I still struggle with cutting them so I leave that to Rob.

Do you have any book recommendations?
Have you remodeled/redesigned any parts of your house?
Do you like avocados?

I’ve been remodeling my house bit by bit for the past 5 yrs! I do it myself so it’s a slow process.
Heck yes for deck weather and I want to get my sister a medal rack for her gymnastics medals. Are you happy with yours?

That must be so much work to do the remodeling yourself! I havent hung up the medal rack yet but so far I like it!

So after I learned about how good for you avocados were, I started eating them a lot. I actually mix them with eggs–I’ll chop one up and put it in my omelet or mix it in with chopped eggs as egg salad (without mayo). I put them in smoothies too. Works pretty well!

Ive been putting them in smoothies too which is perfect! I don’t taste them at all!

I’m not sure what types of books you enjoy but I have really enjoyed The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid and A Hundred Summers By Beatriz Williams.

Thank you for the recommendations! I don’t have a certain type of book I like (other than running books) so I will look into these!

I love your new medal display rack. Etsy really has some awesome options when it comes to medal racks.

I’ve seen a few book reviews for ‘Let Your Mind Run’ and they have all been so positive. I will need to add that book to my collection. I just purchased ‘Race Anything’ by Bart Yasso. I haven’t read it yet but the reviews so far have been great.

I’ll need to look into the Bart Yasso book. I don’t think I had heard of that one yet!

I didn’t learn to like avocado until my mid 30’s and I’m sorry I avoided it for so long! mash it on toast, treat it like butter – you will love it! or mash it with chick peas. it’s so good! also, add in the Trader Joe’s everything but the bagel seasoning – omg. delicious.

      May 4, 2018 at 6:44 pm

Maybe I’ll give the toast a try. I usually just cut it into small pieces and eat it plain.

A closet redo is always fabulous! Enjoy that. Avocados are amazing don’t fear cutting them. Avocado toast is a great breakfast and of course everything tacos and salads w avocados.

So many people have recommended avocado toast. I will have to give that a try!

I’m a no-go on avocados, too. I can tolerate them mashed up in guaq, but that’s about it. For me, it’s also a texture thing, but they have no flavor either. I need to find a way to work them int o my diet, though, because I do know they have lots of health benefits.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 4, 2018 at 6:46 pm

They really have such a weird texture! I’ve added a little salt and that helps with the flavor.

Love that medal display!! Steve is one of the best 🙂
And I’m so glad you are giving avocados a try!! They are one of my favorite foods ever!!

I really wish I liked them more!

We were so lucky that the previous owner of our house did California closets in all the bedrooms, including the downstairs guest room. I’m sure they were pricey but they are kicka$$. Enjoy your redesigned ones. It’ll be well worth it.
No, nothing better than deck lounging. I hope deck season is long and fabulous!
I enjoy avocado but since really dialing in nutrition, they’re part of my efforts to take in “good fats”. I have about a quarter of one with eggs every morning and more in my salad at lunch. The good fat does something to your cell membranes that help you absorb nutrients. I’m all over it!

      May 4, 2018 at 6:48 pm

California Closets looks so nice! We looked into them but there was a really long wait to even have them come give an estimate. Thats interesting about the nutrients from good fats. That’s good to know!

I have the same problem with avocados! My husband also likes them, so maybe I will give your technique a try. I also have the same problem with warm weather and outdoor seating…always need a glaze of vino to go with it 😉

I feel like I drink so much more wine in the summer. It just feels right when sitting outside!

I agree, I miss the topic and format for Friday Five. As for books, I don’t know what you enjoy and even though I love mysteries, this is a book I recommend to everyone (don’t worry if you don’t like mysteries, it’s not a mystery). Red Garden. It takes place on one piece of land and is sort of a bunch of short stories as each chapter is a story of the people that lived on it throughout the last couple hundred years. Not all of the stories are related, but some are. It’s a very fun book.

Thank you for that recommendation! It sounds really interesting and I will need to look into it!

Does it make sense that I like guacamole, but haven’t tried an avocado by itself? I find it weird, but I do that a lot with foods.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 4, 2018 at 6:50 pm

I don’t think its that weird! I don’t like guacamole either, but I can now at least tolerate a plain avaocado.

I like avocados, but not on their own – they need to be mashed, sprinkled with salt, and then put on toast, salads, or tacos. The salt is a must because it brings out the flavor.
I am currently reading “Run Strong, Stay Hungry” by Jonathan Beverly and really enjoying it.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 4, 2018 at 6:50 pm

I have found that the salt helps too! And I need to add that book to my list!

Wow you don’t like avocado?! Have you tried gauc? The texture is more creamy and the spice is SO good. Deena’s book is on my list to read…I just don’t have much free time these days (I know, I know – you gotta make it)

I tried guacamole a long time ago and didnt like it, but I should really give it another try. I really have to make time for reading- lately I’ve been trying to go to bed a little earlier and reading before I go to sleep.

I loved “Run” by Ann Pachett. It is fictional and does involve running but that is only a small part of this wonderful book. It was a book I enjoyed so much that I was sorry to finish it. Maybe you’d enjoy it, too.

Book recommendation: The Art of Racing in the Rain. It was my favorite book last year.

I like avocados, but definitely more in the form of guacamole than just sliced up.

Nice medal hanger! I think I need to buy another one, I just filled up the one I bought a few months ago!

I love guac, but really not crazy about putting avocados on everything, lol!

We haven’t remodeled but we did have some wood trim replaced outside our house with PVC and they did a great job on the repairs!

Thats great that the repairs went well!

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?

#run #runner #marathontraining #richmondmarathon
15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
What are you up to this weekend?
