Friday Five: Things That Make Me Happy

This week I came across four different blog posts with the title “Things That Make Me Happy”. I was inspired to make my own list of what makes me happy these days, especially after yesterday’s depressing “I hate winter” post.

And what better way to do that than in “Friday Five” format, since this week is open to any topic we choose! Thanks Courtney, Cynthia, and Mar!

Here are the blog posts that were the inspiration behind this:

She’s Going The Distance

The Cookie Chrunicles

Foodie Loves Fitness

A Side of Dessert

And now, for my list:

1. Pajamas. Lately whenever I am home all I want to do is put on some warm pajamas and curl up on the couch. I am always trying to get in comfortable clothes as soon as I walk in the door but in the summer I’m happy in shorts and a t-shirt. Lately it’s all about pajamas and hoodies- lots of layers.

pajamas

2. Seeing our house being built. Lately we have been able to see quite a bit of progress each time we go! Visiting the house to take pictures and measurements is something to look forward to each week. And now I’m counting down the weeks until we can move in!

house

3. Dark chocolate. Ever since finishing the Whole30 dark chocolate has been my go-to sweet treat. I definitely don’t have a taste for really sugary deserts so this is perfect. I made a little mix of chocolates from Fresh Market last weekend, and each night grab a few pieces after dinner.

4. Wine. Red, to be more specific. I don’t think this needs much more of an explanation.

5. Running. I haven’t been running much lately, and I feel like I never get to run outside any more. But its made me appreciate the runs I do get to do even more, and makes me really look forward to spring running.

Can’t imagine how exciting it is to see your house being built! I am most definitely in pajamas all the time lately, it’s gotten to the point where dressing up involves yoga pants. Also dark chocolate and wine, of course!

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 2:54 pm

I agree about yoga pants being “dressing up”- its much harder to put them on than pajamas or sweats:)

I still can’t believe the things they make me happy title was so popular this week, it was totally random for me to write as my title! Thanks for mentioning me! I am totally appreciating each outdoor run I can get in lately. I cannot wait for April to come when the threat of snow and ice should be completely over with!

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 2:55 pm

I can’t wait either! I need to keep these days in mind when I am back to running outside whenever I want. I never want to take that for granted:)

    February 27, 2015 at 6:25 am

I’m the same way about getting into comfy clothes after work as soon as possible haha! As for things that make me happy, I’d say red wine, kitty snuggles, new nail polish and a good at home workout.

      February 27, 2015 at 2:56 pm

Great list! And I think its nice that all of those things can happen while wearing PJs!

  4. Sue says

#1 Being able to walk to my kids homes instead of driving from Philly.
#2 My puffy coat that Katie bought me.
#3 My great slippers that Louie bought me.
    #4 Chocolate…and it’s not always dark either.
    #5 Beer, sometimes wine too.

Hawaii would always be my top choice.

Your home is looking really nice! You are going to be so happy there!

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 2:57 pm

Great list! I’m sure it’s so nice to be so close to everyone, especially after having lived in a different state! And I am sure you needed a warm coat just about every day this winter. YES to Hawaii!!
You will have to come see the house once we are settled! We’re getting really close now:)

How exciting to be building a house!! Such a fun process I bet, but stressful too I’m sure!! I’m loving the dark chocolate and wine right now too, especially with all of the snow days we’ve been having 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 2:58 pm

Yes-fun but stressful! I think that moving and decorating are going to be a real challenge, but it will be worth it!

  6. Taca @ A Side Of Dessert says

    February 27, 2015 at 7:52 am

Wow, how exciting is it to see each step in the building process of your house?! That’s fantastic! I love everything you shared! I’ve been changing into sweats and hoodies as soon as I step through the door! And common, you can’t go wrong with dark chocolate and wine! Thank you for mentioning me as well, always appreciated 🙂 Have a fabulous weekend!

Cheers to wine and dark chocolate! And new houses–so exciting for you to be able to check in on the progress.

I think it goes without saying that flying to Napa right now is making me pretty darn happy!

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 3:02 pm

It’s fun, but definitely stressful too. It will be better once we are settled there and can enjoy the other 4 things.

  9. Megan @ Meg Go Run says

    February 27, 2015 at 8:06 am

We are a lot alike. Wine, running, and pjs also make me happy. And if all three of those things happen in one day, even better! Also, my kitties make me happy!

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 3:02 pm

There’s no reason why all those things can’t happen just about every day if you ask me:)

  10. Kristina says

    February 27, 2015 at 8:16 am

Hahaha! Okay, I am not pointing this out to be rude, but you wrote “couching discount” instead of coaching discount. That cracks me up because I ALWAYS type “couch” instead of coach! I’m glad I’m not the only one! 🙂

When do you think your house will be done? It looks like it’s really getting there! I’m so excited for you!

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 8:41 am

HA! Thanks for letting me know:) There are a bunch of words like that for me but I am usually so careful about them because I mess them up all the time! My autocorrect always likes to changes “glutes” to “flutes” to I try to be careful about that one:)

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 3:03 pm

Oh, and we are supposed to close in about a month. But it’s just about done! We will probably move in early April:)

    February 27, 2015 at 8:46 am

That’s so exciting about your house being built!! Dark chocolate and red wine always make me happy (and running also!), although lately stout beers have been making me oh so happy.

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 3:04 pm

Beer sometimes makes me happy too! I have to be in the mood for it though:)

What has made me happy this week is when I simply get to put my feet up. I’ve been training hard and the sweet relief is just golden!

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 3:05 pm

I’m so excited to hear that your house is coming along nicely; what an exciting adventure (and probably a bit nerve-wracking, as well!) and I know you’ll be thrilled when you are able to move in. Wine is definitely something that makes me happy; whatever I choose to eat after my marathon on Sunday is also definitely going to make me happy – ha! Hope you have a great weekend, Lisa!

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 3:06 pm

The house stuff can be really nerve-wracking but I know it will be worth it in the end! Enjoy your post-marathon meal…that is always the best!

  14. Amy @ Mama Running for God says

    February 27, 2015 at 9:33 am

How exciting on watching your new house being built!! I’d be there all day taking photos! LOL
I’m not a chocolate person at all, so you can keep the dark chocolate but I love wine, so I would share that with you if I was there!
I’ve been running on the mill a little more than I would care to this time of the year, so I will be happy when spring comes and I can run outside most of the time.
Where would I go if I won that giveaway….hmmm…I am thinking Bahamas, Australia or St Thomas 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 3:07 pm

We try to go there every weekend to take pictures and see the progress! It’s really fun!
OK I will eat all the chocolate but we can share the wine!:)
I can’t wait for spring either! And your vacation ideas sound fabulous!

Getting back to running has made me so happy. I was cranky for such a long time because I couldn’t run. I’m enjoying being able to run again and I’m having fun.

And chocolate and wine are always good 🙂

The thing that makes me the most happy right now is how Callum started saying “uh oh” when he “accidentally” drops something. He’s turning one next week and I can’t stop adoring his sweet little face and listening to him say “uh oh!” Love it.

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 3:08 pm

That is SO sweet!:) Enjoy this time before he starts saying “No”!

    February 27, 2015 at 10:38 am

I had to just stop dark chocolate totally as I seem to lack an off-switch with it. I am happy it’s almost the end of the month. March had better be spring-like!

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 3:11 pm

I am crossing my fingers for a spring-like March too! I am not happy about seeing more snow in the 10 day forecast!

  21. Sarah @pickyrunner says

    February 27, 2015 at 10:39 am

Yep yep yep I could go along with most of these. The first thing I’ve been doing after work is changing into pajamas. And running will never fail to make me happy. If I’m not smiling while I’m out there, something’s wrong. I don’t know if I would feel the same way on the treadmill… oh, and chocolate. YEP. Happy Friday 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 3:12 pm

It’s really hard to get the same feeling from running on a treadmill. The only positive is that I like to sweat and that is bound to happen on a treadmill. Have a great weekend!

    February 27, 2015 at 10:42 am

The things that make you happy are so similar to mine right now. Of course running/wine/chocolate are pretty much always a given for me! But boy do I love to just settle in for the night in pajamas – especially in the winter. You nailed that one! And I’m happy for you on that last one – it’ll be so exciting to move into your new home!

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 3:16 pm

  27. Sarah says

    February 27, 2015 at 12:53 pm

What a great list! I love all of those things – especially drinking wine and eating chocolate while lounging in my pajamas. All I need is a house of my own!

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 3:16 pm

Wine, chocolate, and PJs seems to be the perfect combo! And you don’t necessarily need a house, just a comfy couch:)

  28. Salt says

    February 27, 2015 at 1:44 pm

So many great things to be happy about! I’ve been seeing more and more posts like this as well and I think it’s important to take stock in the things that do make us smile. Especially right now with winter all miserable and seemingly unending. 🙂 I’ve been getting a lot of good use out of my comfiest pjs too!

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 3:17 pm

It really helped me to write this post! I was feeling really blah the other night so I forced myself to think about happy stuff. (Obviously while drinking wine and eating chocolate in pajamas…)

  29. Lizzy says

    February 27, 2015 at 3:34 pm

I love this! After seeing Cori’s post last week I’ve been trying to ask myself each morning “what makes me happy right now?”. I agree that it’s been an especially good tool for combating the mid-winter funk.

    • [email protected] says

      February 27, 2015 at 5:22 pm

    February 27, 2015 at 3:46 pm

Lately, Strala yoga and time with friends has been making me happy! I went for the first time last night and had an absolute blast. I’ve also been loving getting back into running too. I’m slowly increasing my mileage and appreciating it every single time, even if it’s just for a short distance.

    • [email protected] says

Hi Lisa!! Talking about things that makes us happy, makes us even happier, right? I love this! I second you on the wine thing. In fact, I’m going to a wine-tasting event tonight and can’t wait. Although I tend to prefer white wine, nothing beats a strong glass of red. Sooo exciting about your house! A big happy Friday to you!

    • [email protected] says

I like to get dressed up every once in a while, but other than that I love my workout clothes and pjs:) Have you heard of Pajamagram? Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!
