Gearing Up for a Spring 5k

Last week I started gearing up for a spring 5k. All this really means is I started adjusting some of my workouts to focus on the 5k distance. I know I won’t be in shape for PR, but I would like to get a little bit of speed back before the race.

This week I started structuring my workouts to focus on an upcoming 5k Click post to read about my workouts this week and how I've been adjusting my workouts to prepare for the race. #training #running #5k #workouts

Most of my runs this week were completed on the treadmill, but did get outside for Saturday’s run. I even got in a hill workout! More about that tomorrow.

Last Week’s Workouts: Gearing Up for a Spring 5k

Monday: 3 miles with intervals

3 mile intervals

Tuesday: 20 minutes spin bike, Strength Training

Wednesday: 3.1 miles hill workout

3 miles hills

Thursday: Strength Training, Mobility

Friday: 3 miles easy

treadmill run

Saturday: 7 miles easy

It was so nice to run outside and see the sunrise for the first time in a while!

Sunday: Rest

We made a quick trip to NY on Saturday for a wedding. Luckily the snow didn’t impact our travels too much but it was pretty messy coming back to the hotel from the wedding. Luckily we took an Uber and had a NY driver who was used to driving in the snow. By the time we drove back to MD on Sunday morning most of the snow was melted.

It felt good to follow a structured plan this week! I’m planning to follow a similar schedule for the next few weeks while adjusting my speed and hill workouts based on how I’m progressing. I have my eye on a specific race, but I’m willing to choose a different one if I don’t feel like I will be ready by then.

It’s hard to believe it is going to be in the high 60s this week after having snow this past weekend. I didn’t have any plans this weekend so it was nice to have a lazy day and just relax due to the snow. I don’t every adjust my workouts for shorter distances. 5ks are not my favorite race distance.

The weather has been so confusing lately! But the warm days are a nice break from the cold.

we barely had any snow by us, thankfully! they made it seem like it would be worse. I’m glad it didn’t impact you too much while here!

I had a feeling it wouldnt be too bad but I was still kind of worried about getting around and getting home on Sunday!

My workouts were pretty great last week too! The weather did make traveling a little bit tricky Saturday night, but nothing that wasn’t unmanageable. What race are you looking at signing up for?

Glad you have a good week of workouts! I have a few different races I’m looking at for the mid to late March and April. I need to see how my training is going before I sign up!

Looks like you had a good week of running. That sunrise photo is just gorgeous. I love when I catch it at just the right moment. Blink and it’s gone!

I’m running an 8k in March and I have some speed on my mind too.

      I’ve never done an 8k! I bet that’s a fun distance.

I was surprised by our latest round of snow Saturday night. I wasn’t watching the weather and didn’t realize it was going to happen. But of course I just ran on my treadmill so I didn’t care 🙂 It’s nice to have a structured training plan and be working towards a goal.
You all look very pretty in that wedding pic!

Thanks! Due to our travels I was stalking the weather all week leading up to the weekend. I’m glad it didnt turn out to be worse.

This makes me miss serious running/training so much! There’s nothing like the feeling after a good hill/interval workout

I really want to get outside, but the weather hasn’t been runner friendly this month. At point I know I’ll have to suck it up. It was 66 but very windy yesterday, and now we’re getting snow.

I’m glad you were able to run outside and enjoy that beautiful sunrise! I don’t have any 5ks on my radar right now so I’ll continue to focus on endurance. Since we are having summer like temps, I’m having to adjust to that. I had hoped it would be a while. Thanks for linking!

Aside from the late december-early january cold snap, we’ve had a really mile winter here in Boston! it’s been great for marathon training:) 5k’s are sort of just a fun thing I do while I’m training for other/longer races. I use them as tempo runs and try to have fun!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 19, 2018 at 7:06 pm

5ks are nice because you don’t really need to train for them or take a long time to recover!

Boy it’s been a long time since I’ve run a 5K much less raced one. Good luck with your training!

Thank you! I did one last fall without any training. It’s been a long time since I ran my 5k PR.

I’ve never run a 5K. race… but I definitely like the idea of throwing one in every once in a while.

      February 19, 2018 at 7:07 pm

I figured it would be a good way to get back to racing again!

Yinz look great all dressed up! I do modify my workouts when I’m training for a 5k focusing on short intervals and tempos. I feel like the tempo run is the work horse of any training plan though! lol

      February 19, 2018 at 7:08 pm

Thanks! I think it really helps to adjust workouts to prepare for a 5k. I haven’t done real speed work in so long!

Awesome week of workouts! I was in Cleveland this weekend and we didn’t get snow but back home in CT we got about 6-7 inches. Luckily it’s pretty much melted by now.

I haven’t trained for a 5K in years – actually the only 5K I have trained for was the first one that I did when I started running back in 2012

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 19, 2018 at 7:10 pm

I don’t think Ive ever trained for a 5k! And I wouldn’t even call this “training”, its just throwing in a few workouts so I can at least try to race this thing:)

I am toying with the idea of running a 5k race this summer and I would definitely throw sone speed workouts in. I hope your build-up goes well – looks like a good first week of training!

      February 20, 2018 at 5:22 pm

Thanks! I would be so nervous to do a 5k without any speed work beforehand.

Great job on your workouts! I haven’t focused on training for a 5K…the distance is too scary, lol! But I think I would do the same and adjust my goals for that race.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 26, 2018 at 6:21 pm

Thanks! It’s definitely a scary distance. I’m trying not to put too much pressure on myself!

19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 to 19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 total feet of elevation gain. Amazing weather. Listened to Life of a Showgirl on the treadmill and had some podcasts saved for my outside run but couldn’t get my headphones to connect. This was challenging by the end and I kept thinking how hard it would be if I needed to run another 7 miles today (and all miles at a faster pace) but this is why we train. Feeling like I’m in a good place with 6 weeks to go! How was your run today? #run #marathontraining #longrun
