July Coffee in a Heat Wave

Well somehow it is July already! In some ways I feel like it’s hard to believe we are halfway through 2021. But I also feel like it’s been summer for MONTHS already, so how can it only be the beginning of July? As usual, it’s time to start out the month with some coffee. Since there has been a heat wave I’ll be enjoying mine iced.

Well somehow it is July already! In some ways I feel like it's hard to believe we are halfway through 2021. Since there has been a heat wave I'll be enjoying mine iced.

July Coffee in a Heat Wave

So if we were having coffee in this heat wave, what would I tell you? Let’s see…

I am really struggling with the heat this year

Do I just say this every year and then forget? Last year I even runfessed about summer running amnesia. But this is the first year in awhile that I’ve been running higher (for me) mileage while also trying to include workouts. I have no idea how I ran so much with the stroller last summer, but I guess it helped that all my runs were easy. At this point I’m just trying to survive the heat wave.

I took the day off from work last Friday

So I think I mentioned in a recent post that Grayson was sick 2 weeks ago. He was sent home from school and we were told that his runny nose has to be mostly dried up, and if he developed a persistent cough that he had to get a COVID test. Well over the weekend he started coughing, so on Monday I called the pediatrician. We had his 2.5 year well visit the next day, so they said to just bring him then and they would test him and get me the results by the next morning (when he was supposed to return to school.)

Well long story short, he ended up home all week while we waited for the results only to find out that the sample was lost. I got this as an automatic notification from the lab on Friday, and never even got a follow up call from the pediatrician, who I had called 4 times in 2 days. We took him somewhere else to get tested on Sunday and got the negative test back the next day. (He’s now had 4 tests since mid April when he started school).

Anyway, by the end of last week I was at the end of my rope with working from home with him so I took the day off. I didn’t realize how much I needed it! I even cleaned the house and started a book.

Thanks for the recommendation Wendy!

We went out to lunch for the first time this weekend

The first time since COVID, that is. We ate outside with my parents. It was weird, but fine. It’s so different eating out with Grayson now that he is 2.5 compared to when he had just turned 1. Easier in some ways, harder in others. But we did it!

Our neighbors gave us a free playhouse

Last week a neighbor asked in our community Facebook group if anyone wanted this playhouse since they are moving and don’t want to take it. I thought it would be great for Grayson to have. On Sunday we went over there, took the whole thing apart, cleaned it, and put it back together. (And by “we” I mean Rob.) He is loving it and has spent so much time on there already. The heat wave has made it interesting to be outside so much.

I’m still loving the new Aurora-BLs

I mentioned in my weekly run down post that I received a pair of the new Auroras last week. I’ve now done 3 runs in them and I am still loving them. They remind me of some of the early versions of the Pure Flows, which were my go-to shoes for years. They have quite a bit of cushioning, but they mostly feel light and bouncy. Honestly I feel nervous to get too committed to them in case they get taken away!

Well I chugged my iced coffee so that’s all I have for today. It seems like the heat wave is ending as were are now getting lots of rain. I guess I can’t complain as long as it cools off!

That is insane they lost Grayson’s test and the pedi didn’t even call you. Geez, how frustrating. Glad you enjoyed a day off! Today is a day off for me, although I never really get one since I monitor and post on a bunch of social media accounts. I am going to the DMV though so fingers crossed for that. Love the new shoes! The Nitros I tested for Puma are amazing!

I hope your trip to the DMV was successful this time!

I went through a similar frustration with the ortho regarding my wrist. So ridiculous. I hate being a patient. I do so much better on the other side of the table, lol. And BTW, I don’t treat my patients like that.

I hope you enjoy Cory’s book! Let me know what you think. We have cooler weather today–hoping it comes your way. Have a great weekend!

The process of dealing with medical providers can be really frustrating. And its not usually 1 person’s fault, it’s the system. I really like everyone at the office and we’ve never had this problem before, but its still frustrating.
Im reading about his race right now…he’s a few days in. Im really enjoying it!

The pandemic has been so frustrating in so many ways.

I’ve been dragging myself through these humid runs. And now planning them between the raindrops.

On my rare days off, I try to drive somewhere to hike.

Hope the rest of your summer goes more smoothly.

Thanks! Yep we had humidity and then rain too. Hopefully this weekend will be a little better!

You never know- maybe the heat is affecting you more because of illness, lack of sleep, or hormonal reasons… I used to be practically oblivious to the heat and then one summer I suddenly couldn’t stand it! That was when I had to make all sorts of modifications to my routine (running super early, running in a sports bra, etc.) Sometimes these things are mysterious.
You’re reading the Cory Reese book! I’ve been saving it for our upcoming trip, which is next week. I can’t wait- I read one of his other books and loved it.

You’re right about the heat. It could just be that I’m getting older or maybe my hormones are different after being pregnant and breastfeeding for two years. I thought when I was done with that everything would be easier, but I guess thats not necessarily true!
I hope you love the book!

Sorry to hear about the kerfuffle with Grayson’s test and the fact he has now had 4. 🙁 But so glad you took a day off. Sometimes that’s exactly what the body and mind needs to reset, regroup and come back stronger.

      July 2, 2021 at 8:27 pm

Yes, exactly! I guess it all worked out for the best.

So frustrating re: the lost tests. So scary to navigate all of this.

Yea, I mean I’m so glad that things are getting back to normal in a lot of ways but its tough for the kids who aren’t vaccinated.

Ugh – that is so frustrating about the Covid test and poor Grayson having to take so many tests this year 🙁

We ate lunch outside at a restaurant for the first time on Father’s Day and I agree, it was a bit odd but it felt good to do something “normal”.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      July 2, 2021 at 8:29 pm

Yes! It was like I felt like I had never stopped eating out, but then I was also like…what am I doing? I never would have thought I’d do 16 months without eating a meal out.

I cannot believe they lost Grayson’s sample and no one called you! So frustrating. Sounds like a day off was just what you needed!

I have that book on my “to read” list – hoping to get to it while on vacation.

Summer running’s been tough this year for sure – just keep thinking of how much this will all pay off in the fall!

My running hasn’t really suffered (that I’ve consciously noticed anyways), but it definitely has been a lot more humid than I can remember. We usually always have some humidity, but it’s been in the 90th percentage (and higher!) almost everyday for the past few weeks. Does Grayson weigh much more now than he did last summer? Maybe that’s a factor (?)

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      July 2, 2021 at 8:30 pm

The humidity has been awful this year! Yes, he weight quite a bit more…I know he gained 4 pounds since December so maybe 8-10 more than last summer? But I’m running with the stroller alot less this year.

The new shoes I got on Prime Day arrived yesterday. Couldn’t take them on my rainy run today, though. Maybe if I run on the treadmill tomorrow. They feel ok just to walk around in but you know you have to run like 6 miles before you really know. Or is that just me?

I’m so sorry about the frustrating testing & lack of response from your dr. That seems to be going around a lot. I know doctors are pretty overwhelmed, but my mom has also had the issue of calling multiple times about serious issues with no reply. It’s very frustrating.

This is like our third heatwave already this summer and of course Summer just started!

      July 2, 2021 at 8:31 pm

I don’t like running in new shoes in the rain either! Hope you get to try them out soon.
It can be frustrating to not get the support you need with drs. Ours is generally good I think this just slipped through the cracks. But everyone is expected people to get back to normal, but kids aren’t vaccinated and still have to deal with all this, so its really hard.

I am also running higher for me mileage this summer. I don’t like it but I am doing it. I am excited to try out the Auroras to see what they are all about

Ugh on that covid testing snafu. How do you feel about that requirement? It seems so costly and time-consuming, but maybe you like the assurance that other families have to do it too?

I don’t think I’ll ever be used to summer running. At least we got a break in the heat this weekend. I remember the 4th being very hot last year.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      July 3, 2021 at 4:16 am

I have mixed feelings about the requirement. I do think its good to have protocols like this because most of the kids are not wearing masks are none are vaccinated. It makes sense when he is actually sick, but when he has a runny nose and a slight cough its frustrating. I mean I know that symptoms can show up like that, but kids get these things all the time so it just feels like we are going to be testing constantly.

It definitely felt like June (and really this whole half-year) flew by. Every summer’s been feeling hotter and hotter too!

I’m glad Grayson’s test came back negative (so sorry to hear that they lost the sample though!). I feel like having days off for life admin/wellness should be incorporated everywhere — glad you got to take a day off from work!

They really should! I am lucky that I have lots of leave time available. The problem is I have too much to do to actually take the time off!

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?

15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
What are you up to this weekend?
