Running the Alphabet A to Z

Over the past few weeks many running bloggers have been sharing the places they have run or raced from A to Z. This got me thinking about all the places I have run over the years. We used to travel quite a bit, and I’ve been running for about 20+ years now. For some letters I could come up with a whole bunch of places I’ve run, while others were a struggle. Check out my recap of running the alphabet from A to Z!

Over the past few weeks many running bloggers have been sharing the places they have run or raced from A to Z. This got me thinking about all the places I have run over the years. We used to travel quite a bit, and I've been running for about 20+ years now. For some letters I could come up with a whole bunch of places I've run, while others were a struggle. Check out my recap of running the alphabet from A to Z!

Running the Alphabet A to Z

A is for Annapolis

We ran the Annapolis Half-Marathon in 2013.

My sister lives in Fort Worth so I’ve been on some runs while visiting her.

post 20 miles

H is for Hyannis

This was from my friend’s wedding weekend in 2015.

running in hyannis

I is for Illinois

We went to Chicago in 2007 but Rob wasn’t a runner yet so I am pretty sure I ran on the treadmill since I didn’t know the area well enough to run alone.

J is for John’s Hopkins

I’ve run through Hopkins during some races and I also used to use the track there when I was in college!

K is for Kensington Park

The place I lived when I studied abroad in London was right down the street from Kensington Park so I ran there all the time.

L is for Louisiana

I had a conference in New Orleans in 2015 and I was training for a marathon so of course I had to get some runs in!

friday
It was so hot and humid there!

M is for Maui

We’ve been in Maui twice and I love running there!

beach run

N is for North Carolina

We ran the Rock N Roll Raleigh Marathon in 2014.

Raleigh marathon

P is for Philadelphia

I ran the Philly Marathon in 2011 and 2014!

philly marathon 2011

Q is for Quarry Lake

It was hard to think of a Q but there is a place called Quarry Lake in Baltimore that I have run around.

saturday

R is for Rhode Island

We ran the Rock N Roll Providence Half-Marathon in 2013 but I can’t find any pictures!

S is for San Diego

I ran in San Diego when I visited in college and again when Rob and I went there around 2010.

T is for Tulsa

In 2015 we ran the Route 66 Marathon!

2

U is for Urbana

There is a small town near Frederick, MD called Urbana and I happened to run a 5k there back in 2018!

lucky leprechaun 5k

V is for Virginia Beach

I went to Virginia Beach with some friends after graduating college and did some runs on the boardwalk there.

W is for Wildwood

I’ve been vacationing in Wildwood Crest since I was 14 so I have done many, many runs there!

wildwood run

X is for Xenia

This is definitely a stretch and probably doesn’t count, but to get my X I used an iFit map on my treadmill to run in Xenia. It was the only letter I didn’t have so I wanted to come up with something!

YMCA Bethesda

I ran the YMCA Bethesda Turkey Chase in 2011!

turkey trot finish line

Z is for Zoo

There are a few Baltimore races that run through the zoo, including the Baltimore Marathon which I ran on my 30th birthday!

Thanks for taking that trip down memory lane with me! I’m sure at some point I will get back to traveling more and will add to this list. Although I am not so sure I will ever make it to a place that starts with X in real life!

Great memories! So nice that you have so many photos of the places you ran. I just had to check where Xenia is. Now I think we will all have to go to Ohio so that we have a real-life X! 😉

Haha I wonder if there are any races in Xenia that we can all do!

This is awesome. You got all the letters. Well almost lol.

Yes I do run when I travel. Too bad I don’t travel as much.

I started running in 2008 but seriously in 2010. Paris is my favorite place. A close second is NYC.

I think I’ve only run in NYC once and Ive never done a race there. Paris would be amazing! I went there when I was abroad but didnt pack my running shoes.

I have been loving all these A-Z posts! I always run when I travel, though that’s only in recent years (I know…what took me so long???).

It was nice when Rob started running and we could go together when we traveled. Makes it a little easier to run somewhere new when you dont have to run there alone!

Isn’t it fun to look back on all of the places you have run!? I had a few of yours as well that I had forgotten about. Georgetown, Maui and Annapolis. Where to next?

      September 9, 2022 at 4:36 am

Well the next place Im traveling to is probably going to be Michigan in the winter but I never run outside there because there is so much snow and ice that time of year!

What a fun list! I may have to try this out. I can’t believe I haven’t run a race in Baltimore after all these years – I need to make it your way soon!

You definitely should! It’s the perfect distance away for a quick race weekend.

Great job with this! I’ve decided if I’m ever a race director, I’m going to name my race something like “X-traordinary 10K” or something like that, to give people an X for their lists. I think your X was the most creative one I’ve seen so far.

      September 9, 2022 at 4:37 am

Haha that’s an awesome idea! Although Im sure some people won’t understand why you would do something like that 🙂

This is one of the most fun blog challenges in which I’ve participated. I love getting to see where I’ve been and relive those memories.

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
