The Quarantine Makes You Do Crazy Things

Week 2 of this weird, crazy, work-from-home, social isolation period is complete. How many more do we have left? I think that’s whats scary to think about. This was an interesting week of workouts for me. I guess you can say that the quarantine makes you do crazy things. At least I will blame it on that!

Even though I am no longer training for a half-marathon, I still got in some good runs this week! This included a virtual 5k and a half-marathon on the treadmill. Check out my post to read more about how the quarantine makes you do crazy things. #run #running #workouts

The week started off with my typical strength training workouts and easy runs. Instead of a rest day on Thursday, I did 25 minutes of yoga to keep up with the #19for19challenge. Most days we get out for a 20-30 minute walk, but this week we had quite a bit of rain so that didn’t always happen. On Friday I ran a virtual 5k and then I did a half-marathon on the treadmill on Saturday. So yea, not my typical running schedule but it was fun to change things up!

Weekly Run Down

Monday: Strength Training + Foam Rolling
Tuesday: 4 Miles + Core Work
Wednesday: Strength Training + Foam Rolling
Thursday: Yoga
Friday: 6 Miles (including a 5k in 22:04)
Saturday: 13.1 Treadmill Miles
Sunday: 3.5 Stroller Miles + Glute/Hip Exercises

Strength Training

In an effort to try something new while I am not training, I started doing strength training workouts from Lift Run Perform. Mary created a 4 week workout guide with strength workouts, bodyweight workouts, and running hybrid workouts along with some great videos demonstrating the exercises. The guide was $20 which was a great deal and I was happy to support a small business during this time. The workouts are similar to what I am used to but there are some exercises I have never done or slight modifications that seemed effective. So far I am really enjoying these workouts.

Rambling Runner’s Virtual 5k

Matt from Rambling Runner is hosting a virtual race series, the first of which was a 5k to be run this weekend. You just need to join his group on Strava and then sign up for the race. I am new to Strava and still figuring it out. I don’t like having my maps public so I am not even sure if my workouts are showing up. Honestly I will probably delete my account when this is all over because I really don’t like the idea of people being able to see where I run. Is this a concern for anyone else? Did you figure out a way to work around it?

virtual 5k

I did a warm up and then started my 5k on a flat route. I settled into a good pace and was really happy with how this went! I ended up running my fastest time since 2015.

Almost the COVID-19 Miler

There was another challenge, the COVID-19 miler, that involved running 19 miles within a 24 hour period before 3/31. While this felt like a fun challenge, I wasn’t ready to run 19 miles all at once (and didn’t really have enough time) and also didn’t have time to run more than once in the same day. I did 6 miles starting at 4:45 am on Friday and 13.1 miles that I completed before 6:05 am on Saturday. So those 19 miles were not quite within a 24 hour period, but pretty close. I didn’t register because its based on the honor system and I just couldn’t honestly say that I did the challenge the way it was intended!

On Sunday I ran with Grayson in the stroller. It was finally not raining and warmer out, so I thought we could take advantage and get outside. He wasn’t feeling it (he would rather be running around) but I think it was good for both of us to get some fresh air!

#19for19challenge

I’m sure you are all aware of this challenge started by our cohosts Kim and Deborah. I’m trying to be intentional about getting in 19 minutes of activity for 19 days. This is especially important on the days I don’t run. I have been trying to get out for walks or do yoga as active recovery.

yoga

So that was pretty much my week of workouts! Lots of new things, lots of challenges, along with lots of time at home and lots of wine. Oh, and lots of video chatting/conference calls. Good thing work is understanding about having kids “participate” in meetings!

Have you done any virtual races?
Has being isolated led you to do anything crazy?
Are you trying to be active every day?

13.1 miles on the treadmill is awesome!! Well done!
I’m impressed with your 5k – 22 minutes is an excellent time. You’re very speedy! 😊👍🏻

You are right about this quarantine making us do crazy things! A TM half marathon–yes! 1000 burpees–yes!! Looking forward to stepping off the crazy train this week.

Haha I think we both lost it a bit this week!

I think I maxed out at 8 miles on the treadmill, and I’m not sure I could do that again. I’m pretty good at doing ^something^ every day. The hard part is finding the right balance between pushing and recovery.

      March 30, 2020 at 7:48 pm

Yes totally! I think many of us are tempted to overdo it right now because its how we deal with stress. That balance is so important.

Lots of trying new stuff! No, it definitely hasn’t had me doing anything crazy yet (like not participating in the COVID19 challenge — I only ran 16 miles total last week!).

I do think getting outside is important. We managed to walk the dogs every day; despite the snow & rain, there was usually a time we could get them out. So there’s that.

Grayson does not look happy in that stroller! Do they make podcasts for kids? Now that would be helpful!

      March 30, 2020 at 7:49 pm

Haha I am not sure about podcasts for kids! I should look into that! I started playing him some Disney songs on Pandora at the end of the run but he was already too done with being out there so it didn’t help at that point.

This is exactly my concern with Strava. I joined to do a Lululemon virtual run years ago but after that deleted the app. I’m on it again for our ZOOMA Challenge but yeah, I don’t want to be public about where/when I run. I’m honestly surprised more people aren’t concerned.
I remember that stage where Grayson is! Suddenly they DO NOT want to sit in the stroller. It’s tough!

      March 30, 2020 at 7:51 pm

He was never a big stroller fan but I used to be able to keep him in there for 30 minutes or so before he started fussing. Now its like 10 or less! I am trying to figure out any toys that I can bring and somehow strap to the stroller to keep him entertained. Anything loose he immediately throws out of the stroller lol.

I once did 8 miles on a TM that is my max. I am super impressed and those miles count double for sure. I am also doing the Rambling runner virtuals “see you there” thanks for linking and have a great week

I used to really hate long treadmill runs but now I dont mind them. I think part of the reason is that I like having my own treadmill to run on! Good luck in the Rambling Runner races!

I like Strava, but I’m not a fan of the public maps. My workaround is to use a nickname for my profile and I only have a few friends. I’m doing the Rambling Runner race series, and as soon as I said so on my blog I realized that I wouldn’t be able to say what my times were…I don’t think anyone would go to the trouble to look up my profile but at the same time I don’t want to make that an option. Oh well, the race was still a good experience for me and I’m looking forward to the 10k and half.

Congrats on your TM half! Your race may have been cancelled but you still ran! And also thanks for the tip on Mary’s program, for only $20 there’s no reason not to buy it.

Thats a good idea to use a nickname on Strava. I guess I just dont see the point of using it since I use Instagram so much to share my runs. I would rather talk about what happened on a run and not be as focused on the time or distance anyway. I guess if I used it more then maybe I would understand what everyone likes about it!

Awesome job on all of your workouts this week. I love that you’re still able to get in so much variety while working out at home.

I also thought about doing the COVID 19 miler throughout a 24 hour period, but my knee was super sore last week so I decided against it. Also, I don’t think I’m ready for that type of distance yet lol

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 30, 2020 at 7:55 pm

Sounds like it was a smart decision for you to pass on the 19 miles! Its a long way to go in 24 hours.

Congratulations on all those treadmill miles! That’s awesome!

I am staying active each day! I’m walking and doing my PT exercises, as well as keeping up with a two week core challenge. It’s not ideal, but I’m making it work. No virtual races for me, other than the Sparkle Athletic virtual run.

You have been doing great with staying active! I know its hard now that you’re not going to PT anymore but getting in those walks and doing your exercises will really pay off!

I’m totally in awe of anyone who can run more than an hour on the treadmill LOL I’ve done five miles numerous times (which takes me 50ish minutes, though it feels like a 7:30 pace and seems to take over an hour). Thanks for joining us on the #19for19Challenge! It’s been fun seeing how active everyone is…like you said, it doesn’t have to be an intense 19 minutes every day. Great week!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 30, 2020 at 7:57 pm

Usually I take a full rest day each week, but I think right now its good to have those low-key activities to help cope with the stress of everything thats going on.

Strava has a setting where you can have it hide ~1 mile radius from your address. I also have mine set to private so that I can approve my followers. More of my athletes are on Strava than Instagram and it’s fun to follow them there.
Great job on that 5K virtual race!!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 31, 2020 at 7:36 pm

Thanks! I tried setting up that radius thing on my account but I can still see my maps. I need to make sure my account is private too.

Ditto what Laura said on her comment about Strava. I do get a bit of requests due to being a coach in our local training group, so I am super selective about who I approve to follow me. My creeper incident recently has made me really think about the privacy on all of my apps! You did an awesome job on your 5K. I was also hoping to do that Covid-19 miler challenge, but it was not in the cards for me right now!

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
