Thanksgiving Week Workouts

I can’t believe Thanksgiving has come and gone and now it’s almost December. Last week was kind of a weird one for me. I took off work on Tuesday for my Dad’s surgery, I had presentations all day Wednesday (which meant Monday was my only day in the office), and we celebrated Thanksgiving on Saturday. I also ran a 5k on Thanksgiving morning, my first one in a year and a half! But my Thanksgiving week workouts got done!

Thanksgiving week was a short but busy one. Click post to see how my workouts went, which included my first 5k in a year and a half!

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

Thanksgiving Week Workouts

It was one of those weeks with a lot of unknowns that had to unfold which leaves me feeling anxious, so in a way I’m kind of glad the week is over. Now we can move on to holiday shopping! (I say that with a hint of sarcasm…) My workouts were decent this week but felt kind of “blah”. Here’s how the week shaped out:

Monday: 5 miles

I was going to do 3-4 and then did 5. How does that happen? Lately work has been a little quieter than it was back in the summer/September so I feel like an extra few minutes of running won’t impact the day. In fact, it can actually help I think!

monday run

Tuesday: Strength training

I left the house around 7:30 to drive down to Bethesda where my dad was having back surgery. My mom and sister were there too and we actually got to hang out with my dad until around 1:15 when he was taken back for surgery. We got lunch, I did some work, and at 4:00 the doctor called us back to tell us it went well. I decided to head home at that point since we couldn’t see him for a few more hours and I knew traffic would be bad. It took me about 2.5 hours to get home. I felt like I spent most of the day in the car!

Wednesday: 35 minutes spin bike, core work

I decided to take the day off running since I had a race the next day. Plus I would be spending most of the day on my feet presenting, so wanted to give my legs as much of a break as possible.

Thursday: 5k Turkey Trot

I’ll share a recap of this race on Wednesday. My time was one of my slowest but it felt good to get back out there.

pre race

We didn’t celebrate Thanksgiving because my dad had just gotten home from the hospital. Rob and I went over and hung out with my parents for a while and then got carry out for dinner on our way home.

Friday: Strength training, 20 minutes spin bike

I decided to get in my 2nd strength training workout of the week on Friday. I was off from work and spent the day cleaning, doing laundry, and some meal prep, so in the afternoon I hopped on the bike for an easy 20 minutes.

Saturday: 9 miles

I headed out for my run at 5:30am and was done by 7:00. It was nice to be done that early on a Saturday! I did some food prep for our Thanksgiving dinner that night and some more cleaning. That afternoon we celebrated Thanksgiving at my parents’ house.

Saturday 9 miles

Sunday: Rest

It felt good to relax and recharge a bit!

Summary of Thanksgiving Week Workouts

For a short week, it sure felt like a busy one! I’m actually looking forward to getting back into my normal routine for a few weeks before the holiday madness begins.

Lisa, I get so anxious with unknowns! I am auditioning for a musical next weekend and a few days ago I drove over to the venue just to see what it looked like so I wouldn’t be as nervous!

I would do the same thing! I have a hard time making decisions but when I leave things up in the air its so much worse than just deciding on a plan from the beginning.

Oh ya, unknowns give me serious anxiety. It used to keep me from doing things; I would cancel plans all the time. I am trying to get better about that though!

How is your dad feeling/recovering? I hope he’s doing okay!

Thanks! He seems to be doing pretty well. I know its hard for him to be stuck in the house but he is getting around pretty well and the pain isn’t too bad!
I think I try to avoid planning anything out of the ordinary at this point because I know it will stress me out!

Last week felt so out of sorts for me workouts wise. Hopefully this week will be back to normal. That is if I can get my neck and shoulder situated.

Its always nice to get back into a routine after a weird week. Hope you neck and shoulder are feeling better!

My workouts were definitely on the back burner last week too. So many other things going on, plus I didn’t feel great and knew I needed to rest.

Some weeks are just like that, I think! I just hope to have a few weeks with a normal routine before the holiday craziness begins.

I hope your dad is feeling better.

Great week of workouts! I am the same, I hate being out of routine and having unknowns, which is how it was for my last week too. It meant less of a structured workout routine and more just fitting in workouts where I could. Not a fan, so I’m glad to be back to a normal week this week!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 28, 2017 at 5:04 am

Exactly! As much as I try to keep a normal routine during weeks like that, it doesn’t always happen. Hopefully we can have a few weeks of regular workouts before the holidays hit!

Unknowns can throw me off – I usually can handle them okay, but I certainly prefer routine and knowing what to expect. I am so glad for you that you are back at racing – I can’t wait to hear more about the 5K!

      November 28, 2017 at 5:05 am

There is something so comforting about having a routine!
It was definitely interesting getting back to running a shorter race. I’ll be posting the recap tomorrow!

You rocked your workouts, even though it was a holiday!
And that 5K time is not slow at all! I would have a really hard time with that pace right now 😉

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 28, 2017 at 5:06 am

Thanks! It was interesting to see how much the hills affected me during the run. Also, I feel like I could have held that pace for longer, but I couldn’t necessarily have gone faster for the 5k distance, if that makes sense. There is definitely work to be done!

  9. Lesley says

    November 27, 2017 at 11:29 am

Yup, unknowns are usually what makes me lose my sh*t. I can handle everything else, and then a unknown hits, and I can’t handle it. I haven’t spazzed out in a while, thankfully, and running keeps me sane.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 28, 2017 at 5:07 am

Isn’t it so weird how that happens? 5 just seems like such a nice distance when I have the time and am feeling good.

Glad to hear your Dad’s surgery went well. I hope he has a speedy recovery! I can’t believe you were out on a run by 5:30 on a Saturday morning. I’m sure it felt god to get it out of the way before your big meal later that day.

      November 28, 2017 at 5:08 am

It was nice to get it done so early! I had a busy day ahead so I didn’t bother waiting for the sun to come up like I usually do on the weekends.

Yeah…let’s not move on to holiday shopping. That is very stressful to me. I’m glad your Dad did well in surgery and you were able to have Thanksgiving with him on Saturday. And yes, I crave the normalcy of a regular routine! Thanks for linking!

      November 28, 2017 at 5:09 am

As long as I can do the shopping from my living room couch, then I don’t mind it so much! But overall the holidays can be a more stressful time of year.

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
