Thinking Out Loud: Fall Feelings

I am definitely having mixed feelings about fall this year. I am excited for cooler temps and fall activities, but not quite ready to say goodbye to summer. How about an update on some things going on this week, thinking out loud style?

Labor Day may have come and gone but I just can’t give up my white jeans. They were my go-to pants all summer and I am going to be really sad when it’s too cold to wear them. I usually follow the rule of no white pants after Labor day but I am rebelling this year.

white pants

While I am sad to see summer ending (which makes me feel like winter is around the corner),  I am pretty happy to see these temperatures.

weekly weather

55 degrees for running in the morning?! Can’t complain about that. I even had to wear a long sleeve shirt over my t-shirt for my drive to the track on Tuesday.

track

Fall also means that football is back. I’m not anti-football by any means but I don’t really have a team I follow (I’ll still cheer for NY but I am now surrounded by Baltimore fans and just can’t get behind it) and I have a hard time watching more than 30 minutes of a game. I’ve gotten really good at napping during football games- last weekend was my first football nap of the season.

nap

Over the summer I got kind of lazy about cooking. I still made all my meals but I was less creative and often took the easy way out. Maybe it was just because it was too hot to stand over a hot stove or turn on the oven. On Sunday I made a sweet potato hash for the first time in months- I forgot how good those are!

sweet potato

More cooking may mean getting more creative in the kitchen these days, but I’m not about to get behind the pumpkin fad. It’s like Pinterest has been taken over by pumpkins! And like I said, I’m struggling with this summer to fall transition as it is.

Do you wear white pants after labor day?

Who else has mixed feelings about fall?

Are you a fan of pumpkin? What about football?

thinking out loud
Thanks, Amanda!

I will just never get into football and quit trying years ago. Not my thing, but so many other reasons to love fall luckily!

Glad I am not the only one who just isn’t into football!

I don’t really care about who wins–I tend to cheer for players. But I loveeee the little intrigues and such drama that goes on. It’s like celeb gossip but for sports. I can’t handle the Kardashians, but please tell me who is getting fired!
And white pants are always a good idea. Until you spill something.

    • [email protected] says

      September 17, 2015 at 11:02 am

I always carry a tide pen with me because if I am going to spill something on myself it will always be on the day I am wearing white pants.

Definitely have mixed feelings about fall — pretty much just like yours. Although I do love pumpkin.

You can wear white year round . . . I rarely actually wear my white jeans because it’s just too darn easy to get them easy. In fact, I rarely wear white anything just for that reason.

Not into football at all. Luckily my husband isn’t that much into it, either.

    • [email protected] says

      September 17, 2015 at 11:04 am

I typically don’t do too well with white but these jeans have managed to do ok! And its probably good that both you are your husband aren’t into football:)

Since I worked at Patriots stadium in the late 70s / early 80s (was called Shaeffer Stadium after the beer brand) when the Pats were abysmal, I am a lifelong fan … but don’t care enough to really watch any games 🙂 I do have a Fantasy Football team with some friends (no money or anything) that is the cause of most of the attention I pay the sport. Honestly watching sports on TV is not something I have ever cared for very much – I’d rather be running than watching sports. 😉

I also don’t get the whole ‘white’ thing, wear what you want and when you want 🙂 And honestly, that picture of you in the white pants with sweater on your porch … super cute!

Funny, though, looking at that picture – I haven’t been able to make the jump to stemless wine glasses …

I love pumpkin, but I am not into the whole Dunkin’ / Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte and pumpkin flavor everything … it just gets too much like red cups and so on. Pumpkin is a tasty squash … and I love squash – especially as we head into fall!

Speaking of which – totally with you on simplified summer cooking! Don’t know how many times we had grilled meat / veggies / corn as our meal this summer. Sure – mix up which meats and veggies, the spices and/or sauces … but basically variations on a theme.

      September 17, 2015 at 11:06 am

I don’t really like watching sports on TV either- occasionally I will go to a game for the experience, but even that gets boring to me after a while:)
We actually got a bunch of stemless wine glasses for our wedding, and now that’s all we have! When we moved we threw out all the old glasses that didn’t have matches, and the stemless ones were pretty much all that was left.

I love pumpkin (as I thought about this week too!) but I’m also really enjoying this in-between season. We have similar weather in CT now – mid 80s and sunny days, cool 50s evenings making for perfect running mornings. I kind of wish this time could go on and on for awhile, especially since it’s about a month until my grown-up law job starts and my days of “freedom” are officially at an end!

This is certainty a good time of year! I really hope the weather lasts, at least for a few more weeks!

I love fall, but I just can’t get into football. Pretty much the only sport I watch is running when the big marathons air. I don’t have any white pants because I am clumsy and they’d be covered in coffee stains, but I’d totally wear them after Labor Day. Your outfit is so cute!

    • [email protected] says

      September 17, 2015 at 11:07 am

I do spill on them, but I carry around a tide pen and that seems to work pretty well:)
      I also like watching marathons!

I certainly have mixed feelings about fall. I really love summer and warm/hot weather. I’d be perfectly fine if fall wasn’t followed up immediately by winter, but unfortunately that will always be the case!

    • [email protected] says

      September 17, 2015 at 11:08 am

Exactly! As soon as fall hits I start dreading the winter that is right around the corner.

  8. Tara @ Running 'N' Reading says

    September 17, 2015 at 9:05 am

Oh, gosh, Lisa…I wish I could say that I have mixed feelings about fall (I do love the summer!), but I’m just so ready for cooler running weather and the ability to sit outside on my deck with a nice book and not sweat – ha! I grew up along the Gulf coast (southeast Texas) and we never had fall; it was hot and then cool (winter) and that was it, so now I really enjoy the mild weather and a break before it gets cold. I’m definitely a football fan and that’s another exciting thing to me about fall – woo hoo! It does make for great nap time, too, though – ha! I love sweet potato hash; need to plan for that, myself! Hope you have a great day!

      September 17, 2015 at 11:09 am

I think we are all ready for a break from the heat! I don’t know though, I feel like this summer was all over the place with the weather and made it go by faster than usual for some reason. I am definitely loving this weather I just don’t want it to get cold!

  9. Jamie says

    September 17, 2015 at 9:08 am

It’s winter white… that’s how I justify white pants after Labor Day! I love wearing white jeans with dark tops or flannels with a fur vest… it’s my go-to in the fall. I absolutely live for football Sundays – nothing better than watching a game. I’m a huge football fan, but there are some games that just aren’t the best and require a bit of a nap 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      September 17, 2015 at 11:10 am

I like your thinking! I wish that my white jeans weren’t crops so I could wear them in the winter.

  10. Lesley says

    September 17, 2015 at 9:44 am

I have become anti-football due to the attitudes surrounding it. I initially stopped watching because it wasn’t holding my attention beyond halftime, but other factors have driven me further and further away. I do wear white after labor day, but my white capris are put away. I go more towards winter white when it gets cold.

    • [email protected] says

      September 17, 2015 at 11:11 am

I think these are my only white pants, so they will be sticking around for a bit longer! I am totally not ready to put away my summer clothes yet.

  11. Heather@hungryforbalance says

    September 17, 2015 at 10:13 am

I don’t own white jeans because they would never stay clean. Seriously, even if I didn’t have a toddler, I would spill something on them every time.
I love the fall temps too; they are perfect.
I go in lazy phases with my cooking; whenever it happen I usually just throw a bunch of stuff into the crock pot and hope for the best. Sweet potato hash does sound pretty good though.

    • [email protected] says

      September 17, 2015 at 11:11 am

I am excited to use the crock pot again- I think I only used it once all summer!

  12. Amanda @ .running with spoons. says

    September 17, 2015 at 10:17 am

Pumpkin yes, football no. And I’ve honestly never understood the labour day and white jeans thing — wouldn’t it be better to wear them in the winter so you camo with the snow? 😉

    • [email protected] says

      September 17, 2015 at 11:12 am

Good point- I have no idea how the no white after Labor Day became a thing… doesn’t make any sense:)

  13. Suzy says

    September 17, 2015 at 10:23 am

LOL at the football nap! I’m the same way. That’s ballsy wearing those white jeans while drinking wine. I’ve always wanted a pair of white jeans and haven’t gotten around to buying any. I say wear whatever makes you happy! Happiness carries more points than rules.

    • [email protected] says

      September 17, 2015 at 11:13 am

Ha now that you mention it I am shocked that I didn’t end up with red wine on my pants. I do get stuff on them all the time though- I use a tide pen which gets stuff out pretty well but I think the wine would have stained them for sure.

  14. Sarah @pickyrunner says

    September 17, 2015 at 10:36 am

I’m always hesitant to wear white pants post-labor day but I’m not willing to accept that summer is over yet. The weather is so warm! It’s just perfect right now. Warm during the day and cool enough for running in the morning. I can’t complain about that! I’m ready for #allthepumpkin though at this point.

    September 17, 2015 at 11:12 am

I own white pants but rarely wear them (stains), but I live in Florida so I feel like it is somewhat acceptable to wear them year round. I’m a fan of pumpkin and football, although heavier on the football 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      September 17, 2015 at 11:20 am

That’s a good point that the “rules” are probably different in places like Florida where its warm all year round. Another reason why I am living in the wrong state (along with hating the winter!)

  16. Sabrina @ Nutritiously Sweet says

    September 17, 2015 at 11:45 am

Haha I like that football nap! That’s probably going to be me, I am not a football fan and I am in state (New England!!!) with the #1 Football fans… blah!

      September 17, 2015 at 2:19 pm

Yep naps are the best way to get through football games when you’re not into it!

I say keep wearing your white jeans! Fashion rules are made to be broken.

I will miss summer. I love summer. But I am enjoying the cooler mornings and it will be fun to break out leggings and boots again.

    • [email protected] says

      September 17, 2015 at 2:20 pm

Leggings and boots are definitely something to look forward to! (And of course wearing compression socks under boots:))

  18. Annie R says

    September 17, 2015 at 12:19 pm

Ok I’ve been on the fence about the white pants too this year. I really want to wear mine at least once more before the end of the year! This has encouraged me to do it tomorrow. BUT white pants and red wine, girl you are a brave and beautiful soul. I am far too clumsy for such a risky move.

The ONLY struggle I have with fall are the shorter days. They just bum me about, but I absolutely love this weather. And pumpkin stuff. It’s definitely my favorite season so I’m excited.

Football I’m meh about. I also don’t really have a team since I’m originally from Iowa. I guess the Packers? But since I’m in Patriots territory that’s a scary thing to admit. I will be copying your napping routine instead I think!

    • [email protected] says

      September 17, 2015 at 2:20 pm

The shorter days are starting to get to me too! Its dark for so long during my morning run!

  19. Nona @ RunningHigh says

    September 17, 2015 at 12:20 pm

I could care less about football! I’m not loving the fact that it’s fall only because it’s so cold and dark in the mornings now! It was 49* on my run this morning and it’s dark until after 6 now! So much harder to get out the door. I’m definitely missing summer right about now!

    • [email protected] says

      September 17, 2015 at 2:21 pm

  20. Victoria at Ice Packs + Races says

    • [email protected] says

      September 17, 2015 at 2:22 pm

You definitely need to try a football nap! They are the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

  21. Hanna @ TheMillennialNextDoor says

    September 17, 2015 at 3:23 pm

Football Sundays are GREAT for napping! The last few years I’ve been excited about football but this year I just could not care less. I’m a lot like you – I’ll watch it if it’s on and always have a favorite team, but I’m just not into it anymore. People where I live also get really heated about it and after a while it’s kind of like, okay, everybody chill. It’s just a game.

I’m more excited for fall than I’ve ever been and I desperately want summer to end. I think because I’ve been in a running slump all summer so I have negative feelings attached to it. While I don’t like winter, I also want it to be here because I do my best running in cold weather and winter is when I get to start training for my Spring marathon! My feelings about all the seasons are so different this year, LOL

I find myself clinging to summer as well. I think your white jeans look great the way you’ve accessorized! Mmmm I love sweet potato hash. I do love that it’s still warm here but the humidity is gone and the nights cool off. So great for running!

Not sure if it was the colder weather, the shoes, Not sure if it was the colder weather, the shoes, or the extra carbs but I ran 4 miles at a much faster than usual pace. Which was good because I got out 2 hours later than planned and needed to cut my run short to get back to the chaos of my house. At least I got to run in the daylight! (But I forgot my sunglasses because when I was originally dressed to go I had my headlamp and reflective vest on). Now, it’s time for more coffee!
