A Look Back at May 2016

Can anyone else believe it’s June? These months are flying by! When the weather goes from 40 degrees to 90 degrees in a week it makes you feel like you skipped a few months of the year. It’s time once again to recap my goals for the past month!

May

Summary of May:

As I start to write about May I have to question where this month went! I seriously can’t even remember what happened his month. I think I was home the first two weekends in May, so that was a nice break from traveling.

I think part of the problem is that it didn’t really feel like May until the last week. It was SO cold and rained non-stop for the first 3 weeks of the month. The it suddenly became summer!

rain

I had a wedding in NY the third weekend in May, and then spent Memorial Day Weekend at my parents’ house.

wedding

This month I started adding in long runs again! I did 12 and 13 mile runs for the first time since last fall’s marathon training, and also made a return to the track.

track

I ran in one race, which I have yet to recap, just when summer decided to make an appearance.

FITNESS GOALS:

  1. Continue to work on staying strong and healthy  This has still been going well. I have been really working on my core over the last few weeks and I hope it pays off as I have also been increasing my mileage.
  2. Run/Walk 2016 miles This month I ran 132 miles and walked 95 miles. I’m at a total of 985 miles for the year. (I track my walking using my Vivofit but subtract a mile each day for what I consider just getting around the house.)
  3. Work towards a BQ  Still no marathons scheduled for anytime soon, but hearing about everyone else’s plans has been making me want to start thinking about it!
  4. Work towards sub 1:40 half I didn’t run a half marathon in May like I was considering, but it wouldn’t have been a PR course anyway. I think my best bet at this point is to look for a fall half that would be in cooler weather.
  5. Do at least 10 push-ups 3 days per week I think I stuck with 3 days every week this month. I may need to switch this goal up next month because I feel like it’s getting kind of boring and at this point I think/hope that including push-ups in my routine is enough of a habit that I will continue with it anyway.

OTHER GOALS:

  1. Improve posture I am still reading “Deskbound”, as I said last month, and I am trying to remember to sit and stand well (typed as I slouch into a bit comfy chair…)
  2. Move more When the weather warmed up I started going for walks at lunch! During busier days I won’t be able to do that but the past few weeks have been quiet enough that it worked out well. I have also been just standing up every once in a while to get a break from sitting at my computer.
  3. Focus on saving money This was a pretty good month for spending, probably because there were no big expenses.
  4. Get back in the habit of weekly meal prep I think I prepped every weekend this month, although there were a few times I did very little. But every little bit helps!
  5. Make time to unplug I feel like after 8pm I don’t want to look at my computer anymore. Usually I do blogging stuff from 7-8 and then put my laptop away. I will admit though that some nights I still scrolled through my phone after that! Now that it’s warmed up and stopped raining I’m hoping we will spend more evenings going for walks or sitting outside.

I want to unplug more too! I am impressed you put your laptop away at 8. I go to bed pretty early but even so I have gotten in the habit of taking it to bed and falling asleep with it reading articles… Now they say screens are bad for sleep but I actually do a good job falling asleep within about 20 min as long as it’s not a video.

What halves are you looking at for fall or did you not get that far yet?

I try to never take my laptop to bed because I feel like I would get sucked in to doing blog stuff. Its bad enough I scroll through my phone in bed. Rob likes to fall asleep with the TV on (well he turns it off right before he falls asleep but I always fall asleep first) so Im sure thats bad enough for our sleep!

I am all for unplugging. my computer is away by 5 pm THE LATEST. I work from home so I really need that division between working and home, you know? I can barely look at my phone lately past 7 pm either. its just too much screen time! I love june, always have, mainly because of my birthday but also because the warm weather is here, school ends, camp starts and we are going to Hershey in a few weeks too!

I agree that May was a bit weird. It was also a bit of a cluster for us with the moving and everything else. I haven’t thought about how to figure out June yet!

Moving is so exhausting! Hopefully you can relax a bit in June.

Definitely agree with you about unplugging! I can imagine how May didn’t seem like May with the crazy weather up there – hopefully it’s there to stay now! Have a great weekend!

I hope the weather stays warm! I am finally starting to get used to it, so I definitely don’t want it to go back to being cold and rainy.

I am really impressed that you put your laptop away at 8pm! I usually only use my laptop for about an hour in the evenings to blog, but then I am definitely on my phone A LOT during the rest of the night. There’s something about the endless stream of Instagrams that I can’t stop looking at!

Instagram is so addicting! I am definitely on my phone most nights until I go to bed. Its hard to put it down!

I am trying to make 8 pm our unplugging time also but some nights it just doesn’t happen. This past weekend it felt so relaxing and refreshing to leave laptops at home and be out of cell service!

I bet that was a really nice break to unplug like that for awhile!

Ohhh I love your patio couch! I want one really bad. I’m with you on the pushups thing. I think I started out at doing 30 of them and now I’m up to 75 and it gets pretty repetitive. But, it works, it’s simple, and I’m sticking to it so I better just keep at it. I can’t believe it’s JUNE ALREADY!

WOW- 75 push-ups?! OK most days I do like 30 so maybe I just need to challenge myself a bit more!!

Awesome job during the month of May! I can’t believe how much warmer the weather has gotten. I can handle heat but humidity makes me (and my hair) cranky. I need to work on posture as well as unplugging more too–I love a good Epsom salt bath with wine and my Kindle!

This weather is awful for my hair! And a relaxing bath is the best!

I took almost all of May off after my 10k to get a mental break, and now I’m feeling the urge to run again. I’m happy I took time off because I needed it, and now that I want to run, I feel better than when I had to run.

It is so hard to unplug. Usually when I am laying in bed and can’t sleep is when I continue to mess around on my phone and do some blogs or web surfing. I am looking forward to going home next wk to see family and visit my sister for her bday. Cute pic! I would be scared to wear white pants and drink red wine….haha.

White pants and red wine is a dangerous combination! Not sure what I was thinking:)

I agree with you on the weather affecting what month it feels like! It was pretty warm for us in May so it didn’t really feel like it was just one month before winter – but then winter rolled around and holeeeeeeyyyy moleeeyyy is it cold! 😛

Totally agree with you that May was a blur and everything seems to be in fast forward since then. I love that summer weather has finally arrived and am soaking up these long days!

I love the summer weather too! Even though running is feeling tough I am still appreciating the warmer weather and sunshine!
