in Monthly Goal Check-In · August 31, 2016

A Look Back at August 2016

Here we are on the last day of August 2016, which means I hurt my foot almost a full three months ago. That is pretty much the entire summer, which makes me very sad. It wasn’t all bad though. And it wasn’t like I completely stopped running the whole time. (I probably took a full 5-6 weeks off total.)

Writing my review of my goals for this month feels so much different. I have pretty much thrown all my goals that I set in January out the window, but I think that’s a good thing because it’s not realistic to expect myself to be able to do things that my body is not allowing right now.

Summary of August 2016:

This month was exciting because our deck finally got finished! Also, we had a few free weekends with nothing going on which was such a nice change after months and months of traveling and visitors and being busy. We felt like we could really relax and enjoy our deck on the weekends.

I made steady progress with my foot this month. My last setback was the last week in July, and I think I start running again the second week in August. I took my return to running very slowly, and focused on my form and PT exercise. This month I talked about how I tried to focus on the things I can control but I was also held back by my own negative thoughts.

I also hit 3 years of blogging this month! I mentioned that I wanted to change my blog (which I haven’t figured out if I will do and probably won’t get around to for another 3 years).

Fitness Goals for August 2016:

  1. Continue to work on staying strong and healthy  I made some progress with the recovery this month, but this will always have to be a top priority for me.
  2. Run/Walk 2016 miles I still haven’t replaced the battery in my Vivofit, and I’m fine with that. If I run in the morning I’m careful about not walking too much during the day. If I know I’ll be on my feet alot at work I won’t run that day.
  3. Work towards a BQ  Still nothing to say here…
  4. Work towards sub 1:40 half I am signed up for the Annapolis half on November 19th (you can save 10% using the code RUNNINGOUTOFWINE16!) and at this point I guess there is a small chance I’ll do it. If I continue to make progress I think I will be able to safely build up to 10 or 11 miles before the race. However, if I have any more setbacks than it probably won’t happen. I think the key is to be able to run consistently- there is a better chance I can run it undertrained than if I’m still injured. That being said, I won’t have a time goal; it will just be for fun.
  5. Do at least 10 push-ups 3 days per week I’m still doing pretty well with this one, but not always keeping track. I do know I do push-ups every time I strength train which is 2 days per week.

Other Goals for August 2016:

  1. Improve posture Some of the core work I have been doing has helped with this. I have actually been thinking about engaging my core more throughout the day.
  2. Move more There is still a fine line with this as I try to stay active but also careful about not making my foot angry again.
  3. Focus on saving money Not bad this month. It helped that we didn’t really have anything going on!
  4. Get back in the habit of weekly meal prep This was a great month for meal prep, since all our weekends were open. It makes it so much easier to get it done when we’re not traveling!
  5. Make time to unplug We really took advantage of our deck this month and got outside! I will admit that sometimes I bring my laptop out there, but it’s better than being inside with the TV on.

I remember when we met for lunch in june, your foot had just started to bother you. Who would have thought it would continue! I am glad it’s been on the mend….if I don’t turn on a pure barre workout of some sort, I would never get the push ups in!

I never would have imagined that my foot would take this long to heal!

It sucks to lose a season of running. I was lucky that the majority of the time that I lost was winter, but still. At least you had an awesome new deck to prop your feet up on! Hopefully , though, you are permanently on the upswing.

I feel like a lot of my injuries have been in the winter, and I don’t think I ever appreciated it the timing of those.

I always hate to see summer go. The heat made this one tough for running, but still. So sorry your foot has been an issue for much of it. I don’t even wanna think about the goals I set for myself this year as I’m not coming close to achieving many of them. Your deck looks beautiful. We redid ours a couple of years ago and my only complaint is hauling our furniture cushions in when it looks like rain. We need to get covers or storage or something.

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 31, 2016 at 8:01 pm

Part of our deck is covered so we leave the cushions out all the time, but not sure what we will do in the winter. If it rains really hard they still get wet.

My goal this month was to start adding speedwork back in which I’ve been doing. However, I haven’t been great with stretching and core. Need to take the time for those!

Speedwork is a great accomplishment! And stretching/core work would definitely balance it out:)

I’m sure it sucks to keep hearing this, but you’re doing the right things! and you’re making good choices when it comes to this strange foot injury. don’t forget there is always another race…such as the rock n roll usa in march? hint hint… 🙂

Haha good reminder! I appreciate hearing that Im doing the right things, because sometimes its hard to know for sure when we are in so deep.

I loved that little peek at your deck, it looks gorgeous! I forgot that you completely designed and built your house… I cannot even imagine what that was like! I think you are my House Hero! 😀

    Happy three year blogaversary!

You definitely made great progress this month, slowly and steadily getting back into running! I think it was a really productive August for you!

Thank you!! And building the house was stressful but not as bad as I would have thought. Most of the options were laid out for us and we just had to pick!

You made a lot of progress in August by working back to running! Yearly goals are great but they never account for all the unknown in a year. And now your foot is doing better just in time for the best running season! I’m so excited for fall running.

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 31, 2016 at 8:05 pm

So true about all the unknowns in a year. I don’t think I’ll be making yearly goals next year because it’s too difficult to know what will happen, but I definitely like doing the monthly checkins and reviewing the month overall

My goal is to get back in a running routine. I’ve been focusing so much on strength training this summer because it’s something I could do with this heat and still get stuff done. Now that we’re moving into fall, I hope I can get more running done each week, maybe 3 times a week.

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 31, 2016 at 8:06 pm

Strength training is a great focus, and it was the perfect time to focus on that with all the heat!

I love your deck and your deck furniture!!! I usually look forward to September (hellooooo back to school!!! Woohoo!) but we just got our boat and so it’s hard to have to put it away so soon. Hopefully the good weather comes back a bit before it finally gets too cold.

Ugh sorry to hear you lost a couple of months of running but glad you’re staying positive and looking at the accomplishments you have hit and the goals you’re hoping to achieve. A sub 1:40 half would be incredible! I’m such a push-ups fan and try to do 30-50 almost every day… def my default strength exercise.

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 31, 2016 at 8:09 pm

Wow, 30-50 each day is amazing! I have been doing about 30-45 2-3 days a week and that feels like alot!

I love lazy weekends. It is always nice to just relax. From what I can see you deck looks very nice. The only time I do push ups in during body pump. I should start doing them every day.

I’m impressed, I don’t set monthly goals and am probably not even good about setting yearly goals 🙂 Reflecting on your post, that sounds like something good that I should start doing! It sounds like you are managing your injury really well and will come back stronger – that’s really the worst and I did it the wrong way when I got a stress fracture before my second marathon (basically had to start all over again once I healed). I love your deck! Enjoy it and revel in your progress! Hope you can make the Half work!

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 31, 2016 at 8:13 pm

Thank you! The yearly goes were good to make, but it is definitely frustrating when I see them each month and Im injured and feel like Im not getting anywhere. But the monthly checkins help me to reflect on my progress.

I can’t believe it either. And that sounds like a great plan!

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
