Month in Review: June 2017

How is June coming to an end already? I just looked back on my review of May and realized I never set any new goals after feeling like it was time to move on from my spring ones. That’s ok though. I still feel like I had enough to focus on this month. I did write about what I’m doing to put myself back together. This includes strength training, Rolfing, trying orthotics, working on mobility, and searching for the right shoes.

June was a pretty good month, as I started working on strength training and transitioned into my orthotics. Click post to read more about what's been going on this month!

June in Review

In a way this was a tough month because it marked 1 year since I started dealing with this foot injury. A few weeks ago when I wrote this post about the 1 year mark I was feeling pretty frustrated and not very hopeful. As I’m writing this post, I have much more optimism. I am starting to feel like everything is coming together and dare I say that I think I like the orthotics? It’s really difficult to judge because of the blister, but before that happened I had a few pain-free runs while wearing them.

Now, the problem I have had all along is that just when I think I am healed and fully recovered, I have another setback. I think I need to have 3 full months of zero pain before I will believe I am healed. Even then I don’t know if I will fully believe it.

Global Running Day

This month we also celebrated Global Running Day. I took some time to think about my past few years of running and my hopes for the next year.

Summer Weather

June also brought the return of warmer weather. Last week brought some of the first really humid days of the season. While it’s definitely challenging, I haven’t minded it too much. I think these days I am just grateful for any run, no matter what the weather or setting.

Plans for July

I think July will be a telling month as I decide if the orthotics are going to work out or not. I also need to figure out whether or not I need different running shoes. My goal for this upcoming month is just to keep up with the strength training, go for a few more Rolfing sessions, and see how I am doing after a few weeks.

Really glad to hear that the orthotics are making you feel optimistic! I think I’ve only gotten a blister once from running shoes and it was on a day that I got caught in a downpour. I know you said the humidity was high the day you got the blister. Maybe there was just sooo much moisture in the air that causes your shoes/socks to rub in a different way than usual. Fingers crossed you don’t end up with anymore blisters!

Im definitely thinking the humidity had something to do with it. But Im nervous to run in those shoes again!

Great news on the orthotics! I hope they do the trick for you. With all my travel in July, my goals will definitely be on the back burner. I do hope to continue building my endurance base for Berlin though.

As much as I like to run while traveling, I find it really hard to follow a training plan. Its a good time for a break.

Glad to hear that you think those orthodics are helping. I can’t believe June is almost over. I will take running in heat over cold any day even if it may be a struggle.

Thanks! I hope they are really helping and its not just a coincidence that I had good runs last week.

I had high hopes of starting some marathon training this month, but I ended up resting and re-learning how to swim:( Turns out my shin splints are actually a stress fracture, So I’ve had to adjust my point of view and move forward!
July is going to be all about healing and improving my swimming stamina.
It’s funny, because a few weeks ago I would have said I run through most pain, or take a day or two off before running again. Now I’m realizing that caution can be very therapeutic. I think waiting at least a week after pain subsides, and easing into things from there is the best way to go!

It’s so unfortunate that it usually takes an injury to teach us to be more careful! I hope you heal quickly. At least its a good time of year for swimming!

I knew the orthotics would work! I have never had a super serious injury–just little tweaks here and there and honestly, I usually run right through it all like an idiot. So far I haven’t done any damage. I thinnnnnnk? That I know my body really well…… maybe? Hopefully? To be able to tell the difference between a serious injury (like a stress fracture) and just some soreness that can be worked through. I hope I didn’t just jinx myself!

      June 27, 2017 at 5:25 pm

You’ve been running serious miles for as long as you have so I think you know your body pretty well! Ive had some minor things that I have run through but honestly its so hard for me to know the difference. With this foot thing I stopped as soon as it started hurting but it still turned into a long term problem.

You have made great progress. I am so glad the orthotics are working! Big relief, huh? It’s crazy you hit the one year mark. My ankle/foot pain started last August and it’s just these past few weeks I can finally see the progress made in my three month rehab journey. It will take me a LONG time to trust that foot again. I used to always have an ache when I first stood up from a chair or bed and I still expect it to be there. My goal for the next weeks are to slowly get back to running while keeping up with my PT to make sure my body stays in alignment. Basically, I need to not get greedy and continue to go really slow with my return!

      June 27, 2017 at 5:26 pm

It’s so important to return slowly! And I think I will need to always see a chiropractor for adjustments. My body likes to do weird things!

I’ve never been healed from ITBS, but as long as I keep making progress, I can keep working out. Right now I’m doing what I can do, and I know I can do 10k’s. I’ll keep doing those because I love that distance, but the thought of a 10-miler as popped into my head.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 27, 2017 at 5:26 pm

You’ve done great with progressing slowly, and I think you will know when you are ready for longer distances.

Well boo, a year is a long time – but hopefully those orthotics will get you set! I didn’t really have any goals for June.. just the continuous “get better” regarding my hamstring issues. I’m visiting a new PT person and trying some new stuff. Unfortunately the latest stuff is making matters worse, but hopefully we’ll eventually figure out what does work! Hey, I have to be hopeful!! 🙂

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 27, 2017 at 5:28 pm

That has to be so frustrating! Hang in there, I think eventually you will figure out what works and get healed up once and for all!

Great to see you running again! Maybe the orthotics were worth waiting for? I agree with you on not believing an injury is healed Until it’s been a few months.

I hope the orthotics work their magic 😉 It’s hard to be “healed” only to have another phantom “intruder” make a surprise appearance, huh! Yes, I’m in that boat as well…but am hopeful my little issue is almost over.

Hooray for pain-free runs this month! I know you’ve dealt with a lot when it comes to this injury so if the orthotics are the key to get you over the injury, that’s awesome. It seems like they were definitely worth the wait!

      June 28, 2017 at 7:37 pm

I’m so glad to hear things are starting to turn around and that you’re liking the orthotics. This weather has been tough with the super hot days, but it’s only the beginning of summer right? Sigh! I will have my fingers crossed that you made it to the other side!

I really hope you are able to find the right combination of shoes and orthodics (I know they aren’t cheap). It’s such a frustrating thing to have nagging injuries. I have definitely embraced somewhat of a transition into circuit training and different forms of cardio rather than straight running. If you ever need any ideas of workouts, I have some on my blog! Thanks for sharing you June!

Thank you! I will have to check out some of your workouts. Its so tough to find the right combo of shoes and orthotics! Shoes that have worked in the past don’t fit as well with the inserts.

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
