Month in Review: October 2017

A look back on what was accomplished during October 2017!

When I looked back on my "Month in Review" post from September, I couldn't believe how much has happened in just a few weeks! When I wrote that post, the longest I had run since starting to run again was 6 miles. This month I ran a half-marathon! I feel like I made quite a bit of progress in a short time, making this one of my best months in a while.  Baltimore Half-Marathon The highlight of October was ... Read the Post...

This is What Happens When I Don’t Have a Plan

Mile by Mile Running

For so long I was injured or coming back from injury, so I was slowly increasing each run very systematically. Then, I decided to do a half so I structured a couple of weeks of workouts to prepare for that. Now, I don't have any sort of plan. This week I had a hard time deciding how much to run and ended up doing more than I set out to do. (This is what happens when I don't have a plan.) I should really just make myself ... Baltimore Running Festival Half-Marathon 2017

brf medal

The Baltimore Running Festival will always be a special event for me, mostly because it was my first race in 2007! This means I have been racing for 10 years. I've participated in the BRF 6 times now and I can remember exactly why I didn't participate those other years. The first time I did this race I ran it in 1:53:09. Then, when I returned in 2011, I ran it in the exact same time!! So part of me was like "wouldn't ... Read the Post...

A Surprise Race Week

wednesday run

If you didn't know I was doing a race last week, don't worry. I didn't tell anyone! Except Rob, because he had to pick up my bib. I'll be sharing more about this surprise race later this week, but for today I want to back up and talk about the week leading up to the race. So to back up a bit, I started running again after taking 6 weeks off at the end of August. Around the end of September I got up to running 6 miles, ... Read the Post...

Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!

Yesterday’s long run was followed immediately by Yesterday’s long run was followed immediately by back to back kid activities, so there was no time to post about it. (I ate breakfast in the car and lunch at soccer practice- it was that kind of a day.) I was kind of nervous going in to this run, especially now that I’m getting down to last few key long runs. I had 16 miles with 4 x 2 miles on the plan, which sounded manageable but also challenging. The weather was perfect and I hit all my paces. At the end I got a little confused- thinking I was at 15 miles but I was actually at 14 🙃 Got home and realized I chafed really bad. Another long run down, and another week closer to race day.

Do you ever psych yourself out before long runs?
