This was another rough week of weather. Not only was the humidity out of control, but we had rain just about every day. The forecast showed a chance of rain every morning, so there was no way to know when would be the best days for running. Since it wasn’t actually raining most days, it was just ridiculously humid instead. We had some crazy thunderstorms at night too. But, I made it through week 10 of training, while trying to outrun the rain!
Trying to Outrun the Rain
Monday: Strength Training + 4 Easy Miles
I moved around my schedule this week for various reasons, and ended up starting out the week with strength and an easy run. It was hot and humid, no surprise there!
Tuesday: 6.2 Miles with 4 Tempo
I woke up with a stiff neck, which happens from time to time but doesn’t usually affect my running. It actually felt good to move. However, when I got done it felt a bit tighter. Not sure if running made it worse, but by the next day it was totally fine. Anyway, this run was intimidating but went well. I ran 4 miles at tempo pace which ranged from 7:19-7:48 (each mile was a little faster).
Wednesday: Strength Training + 3.8 Treadmill Miles
I decided to stick to the treadmill to save time and to avoid the oppressive humidity. I think it was like 76 degrees with 99% humidity. The dew point was 75, which is pushing into the zone of not really being safe to run in. I figured I haven’t run on the treadmill in awhile so I might as well give it a try. It wasn’t so bad!
Thursday: Rest Day
I chose this to be my rest day based on my work schedule, although it really didn’t matter. Turned out this seemed to be one of the nicer mornings of the week. Oh well!
Friday: 6 Miles with some hills
Once again there was a chance of rain, and when I woke up it was drizzling. I figured I would run outside since the rain would probably feel good. It did, until it started down pouring around mile 2. It poured for the rest of the run, and was so dark and slippery. I was supposed to do hill repeats but they weren’t very fast because of the conditions. Definitely didn’t outrun the rain today!
Saturday: 12 Miles
On Friday night Grayson didn’t sleep well again, which meant I didn’t sleep well. He kept pointing to his nose and asking for a tissue, so I don’t know if he is starting to get another cold. (He seems pretty much fine throughout the day though!) I woke up tired on Saturday and was glad it was a cutback week.
The run was a struggle from the start. My body didn’t want to cooperate. It was really humid again. At least it was sunny was the sun came up! It feels like I didn’t see the sun all week. I didn’t feel great for awhile after this run, which was weird since it was “only” 12 miles. I just wanted to lay on the couch which isn’t an option with a toddler. My stomach felt a bit off too. Hoping it was just one of those days.
Sunday: Planning for 4 Stroller Miles
We’ll see how I feel, but the plan is to do 4 easy stroller miles with the family.
I’m really over this humidity and I’ve been starting to worry about the weather on race day. My race is October 2nd which is really early in the fall and there is a good chance it could still be hot and humid. I was reading an article that we should expect warmer weather into November this year. I really don’t think I can run a marathon in this kind of weather!
I’m trying not to worry about it too much now but everyone keeps saying that these summer miles will pay off in the fall. I hope that’s true!

Have you had to outrun the rain lately?
Do you only run on the treadmill when you’re desperate, or do you not mind it that much?
Ever wake up with a stiff neck from sleeping funny?
I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down!

I hope you and Grayson are feeling better. It can be warm in early October, but it’s not going to be as hot and humid as it is now. Hopefully any difference will feel better after training through this humidity.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I hope so! And I think my race will be mostly shaded, so hopefully that will help with the sun since I do most of my runs in the dark.
Darlene S. Cardillo says
Feel better.
I actually did not get wet this week but it was hit and miss.
The humidity was awful and it seems to be continuing.
Why did I sign up for a Sept 4 half??
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Maybe it will be cooler by September 4th? You never know! I think this time of year can be hit or miss. But I usually feel much better about the weather for a November marathon.
Deborah Brooks says
I am so over this humidity. However, I feel like I built in some mental toughness this summer that has to benefit me at some point right? Way to get those runs in this week. Our weather was so challenging this week. Stay cool!!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
You definitely built up your mental toughness this summer!
Kimberly Hatting says
We have had unusually high humidity as well….for days on end. Summer is more humid than not, in Iowa, but we usually get a few days breather…usually LOL That said, we did have a decent week (regarding temps and humidity), but it all returned on Friday. I really hope that prediction for warmer weather into November is true for Iowa!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I keep thinking about some of the past years when it was hot well into October here. I mean I like summer, but by October I am ready for fall weather. Not freezing cold, but you know what I mean.
Michelle D. says
I hope you’re feeling better.
I am just so over this weather! I’ve also seen articles suggesting it could be a very warm fall – I will be so sad if turns out to be true cause I love fall running.
Great job with your runs!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! I am feeling better, so I think it must have been weather related. I love fall running too. Hoping we don’t miss out on it this year!
Cari says
I found myself wishing for rain as we had the same oppressive humidity. Hope your stomach is on the mend. I had that a bit too earlier in the week and while I thought it might have been a bug, I also think it might have been the heat and humidity
Hope Grayson is on the mend
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
My stomach is feeling fine now so I really think it was weather related. It just goes to show how awful this weather has been! Thanks, Grayson’s cold isn’t that bad but I’m just hoping it doesn’t get any worse.
Jessie says
Oh poor Grayson.
You REALLY got drenched on Friday! Wow. Those runs are tough, but fun too.
Impressive tempo Lisa!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! Yea, it really poured alot on Friday for about 4 of the miles. I couldn’t believe how wet I was when I got home!
Jenny says
I also had a treadmill run this week, which I haven’t done in a long time! I agree- the treadmill isn’t so bad.
Ugh, I hope it’s not a warm fall- a warm fall for you probably means a later cooldown for us, and we usually have temps in the 90s through October. Blah.
Hope you and Grayson are both feeling good by now! Hang in there… it has to get better.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Whatever article I was reading was suggesting it would be warmer everywhere this fall. I hope that’s not true for any of us!
Thanks! I am feeling better after recovering from my run, and Grayson is on the mend.
Marcia says
We’ve had the crazy humidity but only pop-up showers last week. Soooo freaking hot though and I’m tired of it. I really don’t mind the mill at all. I hope G is feeling better! Those sleepless nights are brutal.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I am definitely appreciating the treadmill these days- I’m at the point where I’m just over the humidity! I guess I didn’t factor into marathon training what it would be like if my toddler stopped sleeping well!
Renée says
we’ve had so much rain and it’s cold!!! I had to turn on the heater 3 days last week! not normal!! just as well since I really had zero time for running last week. good thing I’m NOT training for anything! You still got your miles in and you did your best, that’s all you can do!
I think we have to prepare for early treadmill running this year as well… the summer has been such a disappointment.
Luckily I don’t usually sleep on my neck funny. Do you have an ergonomic pillow? I have no issues since I switched!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I can’t believe its cold there! I don’t have an ergonomic pillow. Mine is so comfortable that I’m nervous to change it! Did you try it out before you bought it?
Kim G says
I can’t express how much I am sick of the weather this summer. I feel like it’s been super humid about 80% of the summer.
So sorry to hear about Grayson 🙁 but hope he is feeling better soon.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Its been a really rough summer. Do I say that every year?
Thanks! He seems to be on the mend.
Jenn says
I think we sent our morning rains up to you. Sorry about that.
I hate the treadmill, and use it only when I have zero options.
I just got this new cooling pillow a few months ago, and since I started using it, I haven’t had any neck issues at all.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Oooh I’ve never heard of a cooling pillow! I’ll need to look into that! I worry about trying a new pillow because mine is so comfortable, but apparently my body doesn’t love it.
Chocolaterunsjudy says
I definitely don’t mind my treadmill as much as others, but I try to run outside most of the time. Although this is the time of year I don’t mind the rain so much — OTOH, I would probably have skipped the run had it been raining this morning.
The humidity. I am SO over that. I hope that you get a break for your marathon but you know you CAN do it!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I know if its this humid for my race that my time goals will have to go out the window! I’ve had to slow down so much on some of these long runs. Which is fine in training, but not ideal for a race.
Zenaida Arroyo says
I hope Grayson is doing better and that he didn’t get a cold. I hear ya on the humidity. It’s been awful here too and hot too. I’ve said it before and will say it again but this year has been awful with the crazy weather.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! He just had a little cold. Of course he had to get COVID tested but that was negative. The weather this summer has been so brutal!
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
Oppressive humidity seems to be the theme this week. I hear it’s supposed to clear up next week, so yay for that!! I did get caught in a rain storm recently. Fun stuff 😉 Great job on getting the workouts done this week!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Sometimes the rain feels good when its super hot out! But it can also be annoying.
